Minonk Goes to Phoenix 2008

Dave-

The fifth annual Minonk Goes to Phoenix reunion is scheduled for Nov. 6, 7, and 8, 2008. We will stay at the Comfort Inn, 73530 E. Gold Dust Ave., Scottsdale. This is the corner of Gold Dust and Scottsdale Road, a mile or so north of where we used to stay.
To make a reservation, please call the Comfort Inn at 1-888-296-9776. Tell them you are part of the Minonk Reunion group to get the special rate of $89/night (plus tax). I have contracted for this rate and it is good until Oct. 5. After that, you will have to negotiate with the hotel on your own.
This hotel has a breakfast included with your room. There is also a swimming pool, guest laundry, and other perks. Parking is free. Cancellations are without penalty if you cancel 24 hours prior when you were supposed to arrive. The special rate is good for an extra day at either end of the official reunion dates. This year we anticipate another tour, probably along the Apache Trail. We may also probably repeat the Indian dance show at the patio bar at the Hyatt before heading to dinner. Restaurants this year will include Charleston (a good casual restaurant), and a southwest cuisine place. Final arrangements won't be made until I have a better headcount.

If you plan to attend, please make your own travel arrangements and reservations BUT please let me know you will be there so I can include you in dinner reservations and tour plans. Also, tell your friends.
Please join us. We have a lot of fun.

St. Paul's fund raiser Friday night

Dave,
I would like to remind the community of the fund raiser at St. Paul's UCC this Friday night! It is from 4:30 to 7:30. Meal consists of: Grilled Pork Chop Sandwich, Homemade Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Dessert and Beverage. The cost is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. There will also be several raffle items. The funds raised will go towards our LOGOS program which is a self-funded midweek program that ministers to elementary aged children through high school.

Thank you,
Stephanie Fuchs

Spring Clean Up

Every since I read the e-mails about spring cleanup it has bothered me.

I sometimes wonder why more junk needs to go to landfills. Every year that we put things out like couches and furniture other people have stopped that may need it to use. I am very happy to see that other people can use it and not be destroyed. I will still put my objects left over out on the berm after garage sale days. If anybody comes by please fill free to take what you want. Remember-another persons junk is someone else's treasures. I would like to see others use it then to be thrown away in dumpsters. City officials don't worry, what is left you will get in your dumpster.

Fieldcrest Kids

We have an amazing group of kids at Fieldcrest! This week I saw and heard the Beauty and the Beast practice's and the kids are just AMAZING! Tonight, the lobby is filled with art work on display from the art classes and again, WHAT TALENT the Fieldcrest kids have! Check it out! I think you will be amazed also!

GREAT JOB FIELDCREST KIDS!

Thanks for supporting the "Angels For Annie" benefit

I would like to thank everyone for their support for the "Angels For Annie" benefit. Thanks to all the businesses who donated items which were auctioned off: Jaclyn and Keri at A Stylish Affair, Ricky at Uftrings, Country Florist, and Cunningham Candies. Also, a special thanks to the Tuesday night bowling ladies, and all who purchased raffle tickets and donated money. In Minonk alone, we were able to raise over $500.00 for my aunt and her family. I am truly blown away by the generosity you have shown, and feel very lucky to know such great and caring people.

Thank you again! -Sonja Frei and family

Fire Hydrant Flushing

Hi Dave,

First of all I want to thank you for your website and all the work you put into it. Although there are many different issues that arise in every community and many different opinions on those issues, I think everyone would agree, your website is a fast and efficient way to share information.

Taking advantage of this tool, I would like to let the Minonk readers know the Public Works Dept. will be flushing the fire hydrants the week of April 28, 2008 through May 2, 2008. You may notice some fluctuation in water pressure, some temporary discoloration in the water, and this will temporarily lower our water reserve. This is done in the spring and again in the fall. It enables us to scour the water mains, to bring fresh water to all parts of town, to exercise the fire hydrants and make sure they are operating properly. You can call the Water Dept. at 432-2644 with any questions or concerns.

I would like to remind everyone, please don't mow grass clippings into the streets. These grass clippings wash into the storm drains when it rains causing sewer tiles to plug, drains plug causing street flooding, and adds to the hydraulic load at the wastewater treatment plant. A little extra effort while mowing can have a positive impact on the whole town. If you have no choice but to mow grass into the street, please sweep it up when you are done. Also let's eliminate litter by not throwing it and helping to clean it up when you see it.

Thank you,
Water Dept. O.I.C.
Charlie McGuire

Wants info on Class of 68 40th reunion

I checked the website and did not see any information for the 40th reunion for the Class of '68 this summer. Are you aware of any plans or who I can contact for information?

Thanks much,
Jane (Morton) Nollman

Instruments stolen from Fieldcrest West

My Daughter came home from school Friday very upset. Seems she was in chorus and they were doing a song with a flute. The person who was going to play went to get her flute and it was gone. After a search, they realized 3 flutes were missing. The Principal called the police and a locker search was performed. No flutes were found. This sickened me to think someone in our school community would take these. They are very costly and some students can not afford to replace them.

There is a reward for any information that leads to the apprehension of the person/persons responsible. Ask your children if they know anything. Let's try to get these instruments back to their owners.

Linda Judd

Correction: The stolen flutes were from Fieldcrest West Elementary school- not Fieldcrest High School

RIde through history

Dave,
I think this worth while historical ride would be of interest to your readers. It follows the area President Lincoln practiced law commuting by horseback. Motorcycles are not required to participate. Iron Riders A.B.A.T.E, will be leading the way through Woodford County where we stop at Metamora Courthouse. A documentary film crew will be filming the ride.

Fieldcrest Counseling problem

My daughter is ranked very high in the 2008 graduating class. Her GPA reflects this. She was not admitted to ISU due to a paper work error. The transcript was presented to both of my children unsealed and thus useless to the colleges they applied to. I requested an explanation and haven't received one yet. I recommended that a procedure be created to verify the progress of the college application process.

After working hard for 4 years, my daughter has to attend a community college and then transfer. Something is wrong. Isn't the whole point to prepare the student for the best possible outcome?

Very disappointed. John Hawk.

Black Belt Test Winners

Hey Dave,

I just wanted to congratulate Zoey Baker and Corey Oncken on their First Black Belt Test at The Minonk Tae Kwon Do School. Zoey tested for her 2nd Degree Black Belt and Corey Tested for his 1st Degree Black Belt under myself and Grandmaster Chang Kim of Bloomington. For over a year Zoey and Corey have trained hard and put alot of time and effort into earning their Black Belts and they passed their test by Grandmaster Kim with flying colors. I am proud of their accomplishments that they have made here at Minonk TKD and hope to see them to their next Black Belt level and beyond.

Sincerely,
Derick Jackson
