On this Veterans Day we must remember the brave soldiers who served our country and continue to serve in Afghanistan and Iraq. The recent news article about Minonk native Matt Kalkwarf being recognized by CIA Director David Petraeus for his service in Afghanistan reminds us that Minonk citizens continue to do their share and more in protecting our freedom and the American way of life. This was most notably evident during World War II when 25 men from Minonk gave the ultimate sacrifice. Historians say that those who fought in World War II were the greatest generation. However, each generation that fought in war were brave soldiers and deserve equal recognition. Just watch the series on the Vietnam War currently being shown on the History Channel and you will see the incredible hardships that those soldiers faced.

Our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan fight under conditions quite unlike other wars. Instead of a clear cut enemy whose positions are known, they are in constant danger because the whereabouts of the enemy is unknown. In any circumstance, war is hell. We salute those veterans from all wars whose bravery and dedication enable us to enjoy the freedom we all take for granted.
