Residents from the Minonk area are encouraged to attend the town hall meeting this Saturday, January 29, at 10:00 a.m. at Minonk's City Hall. Congressman Adam Kinzinger will be at the meeting to listen to our concerns and suggestions. Of the seven communities in which Congressman Kinzinger will be holding the town hall meetings, Minonk is the smallest. We are in the company of Bloomington, Kankakee, Joliet, and Morris, some of the other communities which will have town hall meetings. There is plenty to talk about. The recession is still hanging on and unemployment is still around 9.4%. The elections last November indicated that voters are concerned about not only jobs, but also the ballooning federal deficit and health care reform. The Teaparty backlash helped propel the Republicans to victory in last November's election. Many felt that President Obama's policies had swung too far to the left. However, the backlash against the President's tenure in office involved heated rhetoric which tended to polarize the opposing political parties.

President Obama appears to be leaning back towards the middle as the result of the Republican victories. In his State of the Union speech he said that the country can only go forward together. Contrast this with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell saying that "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." The two parties must learn to compromise and be civil towards each other if we are going to solve the many problems facing this country. Partisan politics must take a back seat to doing what is necessary to get our country going again. Area residents should be proud that our community is the location for one of the seven town hall meetings to be held by Congressman Kinzinger. Let's show the congressman that Minonk is a politically active community worthy of a town hall meeting by showing up Saturday morning at City Hall to voice your concerns and suggestions.
