Minonk to celebrate 4th this weekend

Friday July 2, 2003 Posted 9:30 p.m.
Minonk will complete its sesquicentennial celebration this weekend with the traditional 4th of July events the city has been holding for many years. The festivities start on Sunday, July 4, with the kiddie parade at 12:45 p.m. followed by the parade whose theme this year is “Celebrating 150 Years – Minonk’s Sesquicentennial" beginning at 1:00 p.m. This year's parade will be the biggest parade yet.

After the parade a Young Americans Self Defense Demonstration will be held in Memorial Park in downtown Minonk. In addition, there will be a Volunteer Appreciation Picnic at West Side Park. Anyone who has volunteered for anything is welcome to attend.

Sesquicentennial exhibits will be held again with old Minonk photographs and memorabilia on display at the Anderson building (Old City Hall) at 156 West Fifth and at the office of MinonkTalk located in the old IOOF building at 168 West Fifth. The exhibits will be open from 3:00 pm. until 8:00 p.m.

Due to popular demand the video showing of "Minonk Remembered" will be held at the Picket Fence at 556 Chestnut Street from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

In the evening the attractions switch to Sutton's Park where a cake walk will be held at 6:00 pm. Music will be provided by the Modern Cowboyz at the main stage in Sutton's Park from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Parade winners will be announced during intermission.

At 6:30 a ballon launch will be held. This is a first time event for the 4th celebration and should prove to be exciting. Finally, at dusk the traditional fireworks show will be held. This year's fireworks promise to be the best ever. Everyone is urged to attend the events on the 4th of July to complete the celebration of not only our nation's birth but also the birth of our city 150 years ago.
