Special Letter to the Voters of Fieldcrest

Special Letter to the Voters of Fieldcrest

You have an important decision to make regarding the future of Fieldcrest on November 7th. I am asking you to approve a $0.65 increase in the Education Fund rate.

If you vote YES the Board and Administration are committed to:

* Lowering the tax rate by $0.02
* Restoring elementary P.E. and art
* Adding high school courses for advanced and vocational students
* Reducing participation fees by at least 50%

If you vote NO the Board and Administration are committed to:

* Taking out a $1,500,000 loan
* Using your tax dollars to pay $325,000 interest on this loan
* Not restoring the programs described above
* Not reducing participation fees

The taxes you will pay to Fieldcrest will not change either way you vote since the cost of paying back the loan is also $0.65. If this involved the finances of your personal household and you could choose between having more income to purchase something important or taking out a loan just to pay your current bills the choice would be obvious. Therefore, why not vote YES to allow Fieldcrest to improve opportunities for students and to maintain financial stability?

As the superintendent of the Fieldcrest School District I will carry out our commitments and fully expect to be held accountable should I not.

Minonk Ambulance Association has new website

Hi Dave,

As a volunteer with Minonk Ambulance and a member of Minonk Ambulance Association, I volunteered to bring us up in the times and design a website. www.minonkambulance.org is up and ready to accept visitors. We have a section listing our members, pictures, training, links to websites we found of interest to the public, meeting schedule and minutes. We also have a section for members, which includes our on-call schedule and phone lists. We're still adding content, so we encourage visitors to check back often.

Just a reminder to the public, Minonk Ambulance is always accepting volunteers. There is information on the website if anyone is interested.

We are currently in the middle of our annual Home Interiors candle fundraiser. Half of the money raised goes to the Minonk Ambulance Association. Please see a member if anyone is interested.

Feel free to add the link to the City Hall menu and where ever else you would like to add it.

Enjoy!

Fieldcrest referendum

One last time before "early voting" begins next Monday, October 16th (and running through the 2nd of November), I will run the risk of excoriation for pointing out a few disturbing things about the Fieldcrest referendum by posting this anonymous letter I received at my website, www.woodfordtaxfacts.blogspot.com:

Anonymous said...
The Fieldcrest Administration and Referendum Committee is very shrewd and dishonest in how it's communicating the costs of the two options. They say, "Since the overall tax rate will drop $0.02 and individual taxes will be the same regardless of the vote why wouldn't a voter vote 'Yes'." (Even a local bank officer and its marketing employee have been quoted in MinonkTalk articles using similar misleading language. It's a shame that even professional finance folks won't be up front about this.)

That statement is misleading. It's based upon comparing the annual cost of a passed referendum to the $325,000 TOTAL cost of interest fees for the bonds it says it must purchase if the referendum fails. People are being wrongly convinced that their money will either go to education or taxes. For a true comparison, the proponents should be honest and cite the ANNUAL interest payment. Further, those bond payments, by definition, end after a fixed number of years. The increased tax rate from a passed referendum, on the other hand, does not expire. They carefully have omitted these facts. The taxpayers deserve to see a detailed financial analysis of the cost/benefit of the options. Instead, all they've received is marketing talk from the referendum's proponents. This is an insult to the intelligence of the taxpayers.

Woodford Pundit responded...
Listen my friend, you're preaching to the choir here.

The thing that gets me is every school district with a pending referendum, and their 'committees' write the same 'letters to the editor' saying one must be "uninformed" if they don't agree with them and have not attending their propaganda meetings.

In other words, we're just stupid if we don't want to "give them more money".

I've taught; my wife teaches - we also pay skyrocketing property taxes. We want the schools properly funded. We have kids. But as you say, we don't want to be insulted. Unfortunately, these consultant purchased media campaigns (with our tax dollars) seem to work for them.

Girl Scouts plan Food Drive on Sunday

Dave,
I was wondering if you would mind putting an add on the website for the Girl Scouts. We are planning a Food Drive for the local Food Pantry. It will be this Sunday, Oct. 15th from 3-4:30. We will be going door to door asking for donations. If they won't be home or would just like to have it sitting out front they may. Things the Pantry is asking for are: paper/plastic bags, baby food, paper goods and of course all non-perishables. If anyone has any questions they can call myself or the other leader, Sandi Long 815-863-5217. Thank you so much for time and help.

Thank you,

Supports referendum

I know the Fieldcrest consolidated school district has not kept some of the original voters who actively supported the consolidation on their side when they are needed to pass the referendum on board. I argued against the consolidation using some of the same arguments some of the original supporters are now using against the referendum. The difference now is they do not practically apply. We have our consolidated school district. I trust the way it is being managed more than I have since moving here in 1984. The activity fees are a hardship. I am happy that vocational class options are now available. I believe all the original supporters of the consolidation should get back on board and support the consolidated school district you wanted and have.

Supports referendum

As a resident of Toluca I admit that when approached to serve on the referendum committee I was conflicted. There is no doubt in my mind that an excellent school system is important for the vitality of any community, but I also know how painful it has been losing our junior high. Even so, in my conversations with the superintendent and board I am confident in their commitment toward making Fieldcrest the excellent school system the students and tax payers deserve. That commitment is demonstrated in the structure of the referendum. We can vote "Yes" and still see the overall school tax rate drop $0.02. The board can then respond to community input asking that some curricular programs be restored and participation fees reduced. A "No" vote will force the board to borrow money and pay interest with no ability to respond to the community desires outlined above. A "No" vote will also cost $0.65 in our tax rate to pay back the loan; same as what is being asked for in the referendum. Looking at this issue in many ways tells me I must vote "Yes." As a tax payer my taxes will be the same either way so why not give the district the best chance to succeed? As a banker I cannot recommend taking out a loan and paying interest when I could generate more income for the same cost? As a community member I am confident in the direction of the superintendent and board in maintaining the integrity of Fieldcrest and vitality of our communities. I am voting "Yes" on November 7th and I encourage you to do the same.

Fieldcrest referendum

Hi Dave,

I'd like to pipe in concerning the referendum. One of my main concerns for quite some time has been that our district population did not support two junior high schools. We were duplicating services when we could not afford to do so. It took a while and the current Board began the realignment process. The current Board has done a good job with our tax dollars. There are still areas that I think need to be addressed, like bussing, but the current Board has done well with what they have to work with. I will, therefore, be voting yes on the referendum. I don't particularly like the idea of my taxes going up either, but sometimes it is a necessary evil. I hope to persuade friends and family to support this increase. I'd rather my tax money go into school district operated funds than into the portfolios of those who hold the bonds floated to sustain Fieldcrest.

Thanks for you time

Jeff Geringer

MidState Stars Soccer Club looking for players

The MidState Stars Soccer Club is looking for 12 - 14 year old boys and girls, and High School age athletes to participate in an indoor league in Decatur. Fieldcrest and El Paso-Gridley soccer players have been practicing in El Paso at South Pointe Park since August 28th. With the addition of our experience soccer training staff, we have brought the level of soccer skills to the highest level.

Our U14 and High school teams have been competing this Fall against top opponents from Central Illinois. With the indoor season before us, we are recruiting players for a year round experience. We will guarantee playing time, and participating fees much less that district costs.

If anyone is interested in participating, or needing further information; please contact Mike Zimmerman at 309-432-3057 during the evenings or at 309-527-1515 during the week days.

We are also looking for area businesses to sponsor our Club.

We want to thank Jay Hurd at Country Financial and the American Buildings Company for their sponsorships.

Thank you for your support,

Mike Zimmerman

New Minonk Resident/Mark Maier

To Whom It May Concern: Minonk has a new resident; Mark J. a/k/a "Oscar" Maier. Mark was a life-long resident of Joliet, Illinois. While in college at Lewis University in Romeoville, he met some students that were attending St. Francis University ( then college ) that hailed from Minonk. They became friends and Marc began to frequent your little hamlet in his 1930's "Willy's Jeep" with his "Three Stooges" film collection in the back seat. Marc has always wanted to move to Minonk. After the passing of his parents, Marc decided it was time for a change. So, this past summer he finally "did it". If you get the chance, meet Marc Maier. He is a great person and a terriffic friend. Joliets loss is Minonks gain.

Hockey in Minonk

Dave - there is a youth hockey team in Minonk that is part of the recreation department. I believe this is the third year for the league. In the past, they have played teams from at least one other town. However, this year that town does not have a team so the kids are currently playing scrimmage games against each other. They have a game this Thursday night at 5:30 at the rink.

Thank you!
