TIF District Comment

I'm very appreciative of your persistance on the TIF extension for Wenona. I also feel the time is now to end the TIF for Wenona and help pay the Fieldcrest school.

Viola Nelson to celebrate 90th birthday

Viola Nelson, a former 3rd grade and special reading teacher, is celebrating her 90th birthday. She lives with her son in Duluth, Minnesota. They are celebrating her birthday on August 2nd. I thought some of her former students might like to remember her with cards.

Her address is:

Minonk workers at the Seneca ShipYards

My Dad, G. J. (Babe) Schmidt decided in the early 1940s to return to his roots....Minonk. He and Mom (Olive) purchased a 75 acre farm east of Minonk. After it was purchased but before they could take possession, Dad worked at the Seneca Shipyard....probably for a period of roughly six months.

During that time, my sister Betty and I can both remember attending a launching of an LST with it impressive "swish" when it went into the Illinois River from its launch ramp.

Both my sister and I now value that move and our time spent as kids raised on a farm east of and "next to Minonk" We also wonder if other readers have connections to the Seneca Shipyard.

Here is a link to an article on the Seneca Shipyards.

Gerry Schmidt

Editor's note: Eldon Cullen, father of Minonk native Jack Cullen, drove to work everyday at the Seneca Shipyards from Flanagan..

Comment to Board Members on Wenona TIF

Board Members:

As a tax paying member of the Fieldcrest School district I would love an explanation as to why the Wenona TIF was not voted on. Haven't they rob the school district of enough money already? It seemed a no brainer that all of you would vote to eliminate the current situation with Wenona. Dave Uphoff brings up numerous reasons for not continuing this black hole on the Minonk Talk Web site. Apparently none of you read this web site. Why should the citizens of Minonk have to continue to subsidize Fieldcrest while Wenona slides. It is an insult to all of the tax paying people in Minonk that you so callously disregarded something that should have been corrected years ago! Every citizen in Minonk should remember this come election time! You should all man up and do the right thing, which is to eliminate the current Wenona TIF!

Sincerely

David & Sherri Stokowski

Minonk to Peoria St. Jude Run

In 6 days from the Minonk to Peoria St. Jude Runners will lace up their running shoes and take off on their 42 mile journey to the Civic Center to present what will be the most money raised by the team in a single year so far. This year's run is extra special because over the past several years team members have gotten closer to several families and their children affected by this horrible disease(s) which drives them even more to do what they do. And it has even hit close to home with one of our very own community members this year. So each leg will be in honor of each of the kids and their families.

The team will leave bright and early at 6:00am Saturday Aug. 2nd and run through downtown Minonk on Chestnut as a team towards 251. Please help send them off and line the downtown streets and cheer these brave and wonderful runners on. It means so much to them to see not only the financial support you have already given them but also the cheers and support from the community to start this long and special day.

See you Saturday Aug. 2nd 6:00am!!

Minonk to Peoria St. Jude

Thanks From Nick Cavera

Dave,

I will be retiring from the Minonk Police Department on July 11. It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Minonk for the past eight years. I am looking forward to spending more time with my wife and grand kids. I have made a lot of friends since coming to Minonk and would like to thank them for their support. I would also like to thank the Public Works Crew, and Bobbi for helping me out when I needed something. A special thanks to Mayor Koos for his support and faith in me over the past eight years, to make this chapter of my life possible.

Thanks,

Nick Cavera

Reply to Gerry Schmidt

Gerry: I think there were quite a few Minonk men who worked at the shipyards during the war. I know my grandfather, "Rocky" Welch worked there. I can recall that he used to car pool with several other Minonk folks. I agree, it would be interesting to see how many people are still around who knew people who worked there. By the way, since you and I are old classmates from MDR 1956, I hope all is going well for you and I'll see you at the next reunion

Jerry Spencer.

Thanks to Ave of Flag Volunteers

The VFW and American Legion would like to thank those who helped put up, take down and fold the flags from the 4th of July's Avenue of Flags display at the Minonk Twp cemetery and St Patrick's cemetery. A special thank you is extended to the family and friends of Tony and Diane Ladd and Scott and Kay Oncken who allowed their parties to be crashed and came to the rescue and helped to take down the flags on the evening of the 4th. It would have been an impossible task without their help. Again, thank you so very much.

TIF Should Expire

Dave,

Thanks for the Editorial and all the information you provide. A TIF district can sometimes be the building block a community needs to jumpstart a specific area. However, this comes with a significant financial impact on the schools and other taxing bodies. Without getting into what may be right, wrong or fair, it is simply time for both Wenona and Minonk to allow these TIF districts to expire. Given the financial climate our schools face today, even a vote to approve a mutual agreement to refund some, or most of the surplus would not be in the best interest of the School. I totally understand that new development in these areas could bring in new taxing dollars. However, history has proven that will more than likely not be the case.

I suspect in the end all the Boards will do what is right for our schools and hopefully the Fieldcrest Board can then focus on a long term building plan, which will benefit all our communities.

Avenue of Flags Volunteers Needed

The VFW and the American Legion need volunteers to put up and take down the flags for
the Avenue of Flags on Friday, July 4, 2014. The flags will be put up at 6:00 a.m. starting at St Patrick's cemetery. The flags will be taken down at 5:00 p.m. on July 4th starting at Minonk Township cemetery. If it is raining at 6, the flags will not be put up. If it has rained and the flags are wet, they will be taken down on Saturday, July 5th at 5:00. Volunteers will also be needed to fold the flags on Monday, July 7 at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall.
Please try to help.
Thank you

TOWN CLEAN UP DAY

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE CITY COUNCIL, THE CITY WORKERS & THE CITY ADMINISTRATOR WHO HELPED US GET RID OF 45 YEARS OF ACCUMULATED JUNK!

WE THOUGHT THE TOWN CLEAN-UP DAY WAS A FANTASTIC IDEA, AND ANYONE WHO DIDN'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT MISSED OUT ON A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.
HOPEFULLY MOST PEOPLE DID TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO CLEAN UP THEIR YARDS & PORCHES OF UNNEEDED & UNATTRACTIVE ITEMS. BY DOING SO IT SHOWS THEY HAVE PRIDE IN THEIR PROPERTY & IN THE CITY OF MINONK.

ONCE AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE GREAT IDEA!

JACK & JUDY MARCOLINE

Hi Dave, Could you please print a correction. The city water report said all the events on the 5th were at Westside park, please print that it is all uptown on Chestnut. And the Fun on the Run wasn't mentioned at Westside park on the 4th. Thanks.
