City considers Maple Avenue parking restrictions

Monday, November 15, 2004 Posted 8:05 p.m.
The Minonk City Council revisited the parking problem on Maple Avenue at its normal Monday night meeting. Alderman Sean Cunningham said that there are a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 cars parked on both sides of Fieldcrest High School during school hours which is causing traffic flow problems. He said that there are plenty of empty spaces in the Fieldcrest parking lot. Cunningham said that the Fieldcrest Prinicpal cannot control the students parking habits, and therefore, it is up to the city to do something about it.

Cunningham and Alderman Ron Redenius agreed that parking should be restricted during school hours to the east side of the street since there are fewer residences on that side. Alderman Bill Koos said that the city should first notify the residents along Maple Avenue between Sixth and Fourth Streets about the proposed parking restriction. Mayor Mark Spencer said that a letter will be sent to the residents inviting their comment and their appearance at the next council meeting when the proposed parking restriction will be discussed further.

Police of Chief salary approved

The council approved Ordinance 20014-12 which stipulated the new salary for Police Chief Bill Butler. Previously, Butler had been on an hourly payrate. The amount of the salary will be announced at a later date. Alderman Jason Buchanan voted against the ordinance.

Water tower cleaned

City Administrator Trent Smith said that the cleaning and inspection of the water tower has been completed. The company performing the work commented that the tower was extremely clean considering it had not been cleaned since 1993. The tower is now back in service having had the two required water samples pass inspection.

Other news

Smith announced that the doors in the cold storage bay in the street shed will be replaced. The doors will be purchased and installed by Childers Door Service and the framing, which was bid out to all local contractors, will be done by Milashoski Brothers Construction.

Alderman Steve Mattox announced that the number of ambulance calls are up by 75 from a year ago. Mayor Spencer said that the response times have improved dramatically since going to a paid full time staff.
