City Council meeting cancelled due to a lack of a quorum

Monday, April 21, 2008 - Posted 8:37:28 PM

The Minonk City Council meeting was cancelled Monday night due to a lack of a quorum.  Only two of the six council members were at the meeting.   Three members were needed in order to have a quorum.  Mayor Bill Koos said that one of the council members had publicly notified him 2 weeks ago that he would be out of town on business and would be unable to attend tonight's meeting.

A public hearing is set for April 30th at 5:55 p.m. at which time the council can receive oral or written comments on the proposed budget.  After the public hearing a special city council meeting will be held to approve the City budget.  If there is not a quorum at that meeting, the budget cannot be approved and the City will have to shut down its services until a meeting can be held to approve the budget.

As a citizen of Minonk, it truly upsets me to know some of our alderman of this city do not respect the position on the city council that they ran for and were elected to!  I would like to see all the records for each alderman on their attendance printed in the paper and on this website so the public knows how their ward is being represented by the person you voted for.  If you do not wanat to do the job, please do not run for office.  I know this is a thankless job and alot of time from their schedules, but they knew this before they asked for yours and my vote.  I for one will not vote for any of these alderman again.

If the mayor was following the correct process.  There were not enough people for the meeting, so it was cancelled.  READ THE ARTICLE.  Here is a question, only 1 councelman notified the mayor that he would not be able to attend.  What about the other members?  What excuses did they have?  They ran for the post, they were elected to the post, they should show up..

I don't see the Mayor doing anything wrong.  There was nothing to do since there was no quorum. I think next time, the names of the council members who decided not to represent our city tonight should be listed, so we can all know this when it comes time for re-election.  This is unacceptable!  They all knew their commitments when they put themselves on the ballot.  There should be no city council meeting cancelled due to lack of quorum!  Thank you to the one member who did notify the Mayor well in advance that they would be out of town!

I may be wrong but could the mayor be going it alone. He must be acting like the decider. Mayor Koos lectured Fieldcrest about not following the democratic process, perhaps he needs to look in the mirror.
