Minonk High School Memorial 1919 for Veterans of World War 1

WOUNDED IN ACTION

AARIAN H. MAMMEN

Aarian Mammen attended Minonk High School from 1908 to 1909. He enlisted December 9, 1917, at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, in the Ordinance Corps. He was stationed at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and was later sent to Camp Merritt, New Jersey, and from there on March 14, 1918, left for Europe and landed in Bordeaux, France, on March 28. Aarian was gassed on September 26, 1918. From Brest he sailed for the United States and landed at Newport News, Virginia. On February 10, 1919, he was discharged at Camp Grant.

HUGH T. GIBBONS

Hugh was a member of Company I. in the "Old Ninth" Infantry which was later part of the Second Division "Overseas." He went to France in September, 1917. He was confined in a hospital in La Harve, France, where he remained until December; the following April he was again confined in, a hospital because he was run down generally. Hugh was severely wounded November 1 while in action in the battle of the Meuse. He was then in the hospital near Tours. He returned to the United States, January 31, 1919.

He is now at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, MD., being held there on account of a head wound. An incident, worth mention, occurred somewhere in France. Hugh Gibbons met Dean Memmen, the two first Minonk boys to land in France. Dean and Hugh met in a hospital where Hugh was sent on account of sickness and Dean because of a wound received in battle.
