OUR SCHOOLS

As early as the summer of 1857 the first schoolhouse was erected. It was 20x30 feet in size and cost $300. It served a variety of purposes-a place of worship for several denominations, for township elections, debating clubs, lectures, etc. John Peck was the first teacher. Wm. B. Carson taught from September 1858, to the end of the year in 1859. In 1864 the east side high school building was erected, but the east wing has since been added. The west side building was erected a few years later. Our schools are in excellent condition. The corps of teachers for the ensuing year are:

Superintendent, R. A. Beebe, Emma McAllister, Sadie Davis, Mamie B. Wickler, Daisy Christian, Lucy Olge, Minnie Simater, Mrs. Jennie Webber, Maggie Nolan and Mrs. E. Loucks.

The Board of Education consists of the following members: President, Thomas Kennedy; Secretary, J. A. Simpson; W. F. Priebe, Beni Pope, T. P. Clarke, Josiah Kerrick, Tom Pickard.
