An Ode to 2007

December 31, 2007       Editor: Dave Uphoff
The new year started with a terrible tragedy,
The loss of 3 youths on a slick highway,
Reminding us of how Central Illinois winters,
Is fraught with bad weather and driving dangers.

The plug for the proposed raceway track was pulled,
After realizing that the proposal was over sold,
The City now controls the development of the land,
With potential offers already in hand.

City Administrator Trent Smith resigned in September,
He will not be replaced so as to save legal tender,
Instead, the City hired EDC to show us how,
To get some milk out of this development cow.

A new ambulance shed was built for 90K,
Allowing the training of EMT's in a better way,
Changes in squad members created spite,
As shown from anonymous comments on this website.

The City developed a new plan to treat storm water,
After listening to everyone scream and holler,
About the flooding that created much irritation,
Yet no one showed up to hear the presentation.

The Patriot Restaurant opened up on South Main,
And the Christian Life Fellowship Church did the same,
The Third Base Tap will sell no more beers,
And Zivney Cheese closed after 70 years.

Fieldcrest played baseball in Wenona this year,
After the coach said Minonk's diamond needed repair,
Thus saving the coach 10 miles of driving to practice,
And offering our ball players to I-39 as a sacrifice.

Eventually, reason prevailed as the new board said, Bunk!
And voted to return the ball games to Minonk,
Aided in part by an infusion of $25,000 by the City,
To upgrade the ballpark and make Fieldcrest happy.

Fieldcrest Middle School went to the State Scholastic Bowl,
Which put the school district on a cerebral roll,
As Fieldcrest South won a blue ribbon academic award,
Proving that the brain is mightier than the sword.

The State of Illinois had no budget at all,
Due to a governor who played hard ball,
After money was denied for his pet fund,
He spent the money anyway, doing an end run.

Another year of plentiful rain and high yields,
Gave the farmers record profits from their fields,
Aerial spraying helped the corn grow higher,
And strangely many peoples pets also expired.

As you can see the news is both good and bad,
But you might want to pull your pants legs up a tad,
For an election year awaits us with all of its muck,
Happy New Year everyone and good luck!

I don't understand why the others in my neighborhood didn't go to the storm city meeting. I circulated a letter before the meeting to them to be sure they didn't let this opportunity to get the problem at least partially fixed. I don't know why our counselman didn't contact them and ask them to come. I know why I don't attend the meetings. I also know that it is pointless to participate in public decisions until two things happen. The first is that the citizens attend and get envoled and the second is that all the truth about an issue is discussed and not just what the proponent wants to say. So maybe it would be better to only talk about the good things and ignore the tough issues.
