City needs to find a way to promote development

With the resignation of City Administrator Trent Smith last week, the Minonk City Council must now find a replacement. The job of Minonk City Administrator must include not only the responsibility of overseeing the operations of the City it also must include the promotion of development in Minonk. Not any easy task. Like most administrative positions, the job of being a City Administrator is made more complex by the ever increasing paperwork required by the federal and state government.

Even though computers have cut out much of the filing of paperwork, it has not reduced the amount of information that needs to be processed. In fact, the advent of computers has increased the amount of information that has to be processed. This is due not only to the increase in laws but also because the use of computers has made it easier to generate information that has to be processed.

The workload of a small town City Administrator can be just as great as that of a larger city since both have to comply with the same governmental paperwork. In addition, there is a bigger clerical staff to handle much of the paperwork in a larger city. A small town City Administrator has to juggle his time between managing the running of the city's operations and seeking out development opportunities for the city.

Minonk is at a critical crossroads in which the development opportunities of the City are of paramount importance. The Caroline Development needs to be developed further with a fast food restaurant and other roadside businesses. Section Six north of Minonk is still available for development at a bargain price to any developer willing to hang their hat in Minonk. Therefore, a new City Administrator should have the skills necessary to promote development in Minonk.

WIll it be possible to find a City Administrator who has the ability to manage the City's operations while pursuing development opportunities at the salary of a small town City Administrator? Perhaps, but there may be other options as well.

One possible solution is to hire a City Administrator whose main job is to manage the City's operations and personnel and to hire a consultant to promote development in Minonk. Whether this is affordable cannot be determined at this point. Maybe a consultant could be hired on a contingency basis to promote the City's development.

Another solution is to hire a local retiree to aid in the promotion of development in Minonk. I know of a few individuals who have been active in civic affairs that would make good candidates to promote Minonk. They would be less expensive than hiring a consultant. To promote Minonk adequately requires a person who has the time to attend conventions and meetings, submit proposals, create promotional literature, etc. I know there are a few individuals in Minonk who would qualify for this position and I want to make it clear that I am not one of them.

I had a few dealings with Trent Smith while he was the City Administrator. He treated me with respect and provided me with help and information when I needed it. I wish him well in his future plans.

Regardless of who is hired or how many are hired, the Minonk City Council needs to find a way to promote development in Minonk.

I also agree that additional development needs to take place, but it also needs to be done in such a way that does not detract from the quaint atmosphere that Minonk currently enjoys. I am curious as to why the only fast food resturant around is Subway. If a fast food resturant would come to town, I would like to see a Sonic, or something along that nature. It would be different enough to attract highway business, but not really detract from the fine resturants currently in Minonk (I really like LaVons and Woody's)

I agree 100% with you on your editorial. I am not politically smart about running a city or pretend to be. I just do not understand why Minonk has not had any further developments to the Caroline Development. I understand it cannot be an easy job but look how many years it's been since it's been developed and still we have not seen nor heard of any future developments. And the race track well in my opinion that was just a joke! Everyone got all hyped up and we'll never see that happen. And to be perfectly honest I am not so sure the city didn't get greedy and blow that one. We hear alot of talk but nothing ever transpires. It looks good on paper and stays there. I hope and pray the next City Administrator and the Council will get Minonk booming with business!
