Minonk High School Memorial 1919 for Veterans of World War 1


HARRY EICH

Harry Eich attended the Minonk High School, leaving at the age of seventeen years. He was drafted at Eureka, Illinois April 2, 1918. He volunteered in the place of another soldier. He arrived at Fort Terry, April 5, from where he was transferred to Fort Wright, and from there to Hoboken, New Jersey, and left Hoboken for Camp Merritt. From there he was sent to Camp Upton, Long Island, leaving there for New York City. He sailed October 6, on the transport, "Carmaia," arriving in Liverpool, England, October 18. He was sent to Winchester and then to Southampton. He arrived in France October 25. He was at Cherbonny and Malestroic and Camp De Messeen in France before he went to Brest, France, from where he sailed to New York City, arriving December 24. He was sent to Camp Merritt and Camp Taylor. He was discharged January 20, 1919.

GEORGE ONNEN

George Onnen was a student in Minonk High School for nearly a year. He left Minonk, April 28, 1918, for Camp Dodge, Iowa. From there he was sent to Camp Travis, Texas. After three weeks of training there he sailed for France, arriving there July 5. He attended school in France. The last heard of him, he was with the Army of Occupation in Germany.

CURTIS M. DAVISON

Curtis Davison attended the Minonk High School from 1908 to 1911. He was in the first draft, Class A and was sent to Camp Jackson, South Carolina, September 26, 1917, at the age of twenty-four years. On October 10 he was promoted to Corporal and transferred to Camp Wheeler, Macon, Georgia. Then in August he was promoted to sergeant. Curtis was retained at Camp Wheeler as an instructor for new men. On October 16 he sailed from New York, landing in France. He was sent to the front at the signing of the armistice. He is at present serving on Military Police duty in France.

FRANK MATUSZEWICZ

Frank Matuszewicz attended Minonk High School from 1914 to 1917. He enlisted at Bloomington, Illinois, at the age of nineteen in the Air Service. He was transferred from there to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, and from there to Kelly Field, Texas. Later he was sent with 333rd Aero Squadron to Morrison, Virginia, where he remained for six months. March 25 he was promoted to corporal. In the early part of July he went to Hempstead, Long Island, New York, and on July 30 he left for England on the transport, "Mandingo." Arrived in Liverpool August 15, from where he went to Winchester and Thetford and finally to Duxford. He sailed for home, November 15, on the Mauertania, landing in New York City. He was discharged at Camp Grant on December 24, 1918.

TIMOTHY I. RYAN

Timothy Ryan attended the Minonk High School from 1912 to 1916. He enlisted at the age of 21 in the medical corps at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, June 1, 1918. He was sent to the Hospital Corps Training School for three months. "Tim" was sent to Camp Farragut and two weeks later to Camp Logan. Later he returned to Great Lakes and was stationed at Medical Headquarters. During the Spanish Influenza epidemic, he cared for the sick for some time at various camps. On December 13, 1918, he was put on a draft for Hampton Roads, Virginia, and went to the Pharmacist Mate School. He was discharged February 20, 1919.

HOWARD M. JURY

Howard Jury attended the Minonk High School from 1912 to 1916. He enlisted June 1, 1918, at Great Lakes, Illinois, and was soon transferred to seaman guard on the main station and later to the main gate. He remained at this work four months and then entered the armed guard school. Howard was sent to the Brooklyn Navy Yards. Later he was transferred to Yorktown, Virginia, and again to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was released from service December 10, 1919.

ROWLAND H. TUCKER

Rowland Tucker entered Minonk High School in 1910, and graduated in 1914. He enlisted in the U.S.N. Aviation Service on June 5, 1918, at Great Lakes. His detention period was spent in Camp Decatur, Co. 283, 8th Regiment. He attended the Naval Aviation School from September 13 to December 15, 1918, and graduated receiving a 2nd class machinist's aviation rating. He was discharged January 17, 1919.

OSCAR KING

Oscar King attended the Minonk High School from 1911 to 1915. He graduated with the class of 1915 at the age of 18. He enlisted as 2nd class seaman at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, May 23, 1918. Oscar was stationed in different camps at Great Lakes. He was in Camp Farragut four days and then in Co. R. and Co. J. 1st Regiment, Camp Dewey. In the latter Company he acted as camp guard during July. In September he was transferred to Co. D, Coxswain School, 11th Regiment and in a few weeks to Co. C, of same regiment. He finished Coxswain School with rank of Coxswain. Oscar was discharged December 17, 1918.
