At a recent National Council of Administration, VFW Ladies auxiliary meeting, the council voted to increase the amount given to ladies who had applied for Cancer Grants. The previous amount had been $250, and given to a member only twice during her life time.
Effective October 1, 2011 the decision was made to increase the amount given for each Cancer grant from $250 to $550 and given only twice during a members life time.
Guidelines to qualify for a Cancer grant include:
* You must be a VFW auxiliary member for at least one full year of membership
* Your current dues must be paid or you are a Life member
* Application must be made within 12 months from the date of your last surgery
* A member is allowed two grants, twelve months must elapse between new surgery and /or treatment, for a second application to be considered. Continuous treatment which lasts beyond the twelve month period will qualify for a second grant.
* Applications will not be accepted for members who are now deceased, unless the grant has been stamped upon receipt at National Headquarters, at the time of the members death.
For those auxiliary ladies who were members of the Minonk 7185 auxiliary, if you remained an active member and transferred to another auxiliary you may qualify for a grant if needed, for ladies who chose not to remain members at large and not pay dues to any auxiliary, you would need to become active again before you would qualify.
A possible $550 or $1100 in Cancer grants can be a great benefit to ladies and help with their expenses. Anyone who might be interested, can contact Judith Reeser, 7th District Cancer Chairman, at 309-527-4888 or Shirley Carstens, 7th District Ladies President at 815-842-1486.
