Guest speaker Jack Murphy

A Veterans Day ceremony was held at the Fieldcrest High School gym Thursday morning. Fieldcrest students and the public were in attendance. The welcome address was given by Student Council President Nick Meyer followed by an invocation by Pastor RIchard Olson.
The Fieldcrest High School Chorus sang the National Anthem which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Fieldcrest HS teacher Phil Pulley, who is a veteran, gave his thoughts on the importance of Veterans Day. This was followed by a stirring rendition of
America The Beautiful by the Fieldcrest HS Band.
American Legion Commander Jim Jacek and Fieldcrest teacher William Lapp each gave a short speech.
The guest speaker was Jack Murphy from Pontiac. Mr. Murphy was a teacher and coach at MDR High School in 1958-1959. He went on to a successful career as a basketball coach at several other schools. He currently helps run the War Museum in Pontiac and is a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Murphy gave a history of the wars in the 20th Century and the origin of Veterans Day and urged everyone to give thanks to the veterans who have helped preserve our freedom. The ceremony was concluded with a rifle firing and playing of the taps outside the gym.
