Heavy rains hit Minonk area
Wednesday, September 10, 2014 - Posted 12:47:46 PM
The Minonk area was drenched with over 3.5 inches of rain the past 2 days. Over and inch of rain was received early Tuesday morning and another 2.5 inches of rain was received starting late Tuesday night and lasting into Wednesday morning. Flooding occurred throughout the area with the pond at Millennium Park north of Minonk overflowing its banks.
The rain is forecast to bring in cooler temperatures for the weekend with highs in the 60's which will bring to an end one of the coolest summers on record. The cool summer and adequate rainfall resulted in a bumper crop for corn this year. Experts are calling for a record yield with some fields getting over 250 bushels an acre. The forecast crop yield has resulted in corn prices dropping from $4.40 in June down to $3.40 which may result in losses for some farmers in spite of a record yield.
