City Administrator Trent Smith resigns

Monday, August 20, 2007 - Posted 6:14:09 PM

Mayor Bill Koos announced the resignation of City Administrator Trent Smith at a meeting of the Minonk City Council Monday night.  No reason was given for the resignation which was effective August 20, 2007.  The termination agreement stipulates that Smith shall be compensated for 5 accrued unused vacation days and his 60 days of sick leave will be submitted to the IMRF for additional service credit.  In addition, Smith will receive 6 months of separation pay that is payable in the next six months.

Koos said that as a result of Smith's resignation, the job opening for an entry level Public Works employee has been voided.   When  the job application is re-opened all current applications must be resubmitted.

Sounds like there is a lot going on at City Hall that all of us as clearly concerned citizens, AND VOTERS, need to be made more aware of. I have always trusted that the people voted to take care of the City would do so with the City's best interest in mind. I am really beginning to wonder. Think it stops here? Read Kona Taylor's e-mail. I am finding out on here that it goes far deeper than I at first thought. - Concerned Citizen

yes. and what "I know" wrote is accurate also. many people in this community who served in positions of authority were "forced out" WITHOUT 6 months pay (or ANY for that matter) yet Smith sat by and said not a WORD in their defense. Further, resignation helps one to "save face" instead of firing, which would have made details public and resulted in breach of contract where the city would have HAD to have paid him salary until the contract was officially up. That's the law, which supersedes smalltown politics.

What does Smith's resignation have to do with the Public Works entry level position? Another of the "doesn't have to make sense decisions" on the part of 'those in charge' at city hall.

Separation Pay, if a part of a contract, is usually negotiated as part of a settlement agreement when the employer wants to terminate a higher level employee. It doesn't make sense to pay an employee who wants to resign another 6 months. If that was part of his contract, someone should really question the sanity or business sense of the people drawing up the contracts.

Well I believe that what separation pay has been explained. Now curios asked if he gets 6 months pay when he leaves his job do not know check your contract and you can find out. Now as far as the rest wondering what happened well go find out it is a matter of public record for the most part. If you think you are getting messed over by the city officers that you have then go and run for there spot and do a better job as you seem to think you can. But if your going to complain at least do something or keep it to your self cause it must not bother you to much if you sit in your house every time there is a meeting and never go. So as I said somewhere else on here shut up or put up.

It would be nice to know why Trent Smith resigned. If the resignation was his idea and he did not want the reason known, then we should respect that. But..... if he was forced out, we, as citizens of this fair city, should know by whom and why. It will be interesting to see who will replace him and I would be willing to bet Mr. Smith's replacement will not be an outsider.

I feel trent was a good employee of this town, and will be missed in the future. Just think back to before we had him,Hall, Shirly? wonder why he quit

Whose toes did he step on? Who is running this city?

If you are upset at the separation pay, blame your elected leaders. If you were in the same position as the fmr. city administrator, you would want what was in your contract as well. If you are really concerned, perhaps you should run for office or at least attend the council meetings. I'm most curious of what led to the separation/termination.

He should pay the city for 6 months.

separation pay wrote on 8/22/2007 at 04:40:14

separation pay is a commonly negotiated benefit organized when someone is hired for a position and is written into the employment contact. it's pretty common among higher up administrative positions.

What did this guy do? According to the Pantagraph he was forced out. Makes one wonder what is going on at City Hall.

reality wrote on 8/22/2007 at 06:19:15

Usually when someone resigns and gets separation pay it is the result of a negotiation. They negotiate a "deal" to resign for whatever reason. The truth will come out eventually. I doubt if it was a provision in his contract.

Info wrote on 8/22/2007 at 04:50:01

All of this was in his contract that was negotiated late last year.
