The Fieldcrest Board of Education defeated a motion to move the baseball games for Fieldcrest High School from Minonk to Wenona at its monthly meeting Thursday night.
The decision caps the controversy that erupted last spring when the Board approved a request by the Fieldcrest baseball coach to move the games this spring from Minonk to Wenona. The reason given for the move was that the ball diamond in Minonk did not drain well and resulted in many games being cancelled due to wet conditions. Other reasons cited for the move was that the Wenona ball diamond was bigger and adhered more to the standards required for tournament play.
However, many parents objected to the move because of the time and incovenience required for highway travel between the communities for practice and for games as well as for the risk associated with highway travel. Objectors also denied that the Minonk ball diamond resulted in more unplayable games.
School board member Scott Hillenburg said that he did not vote to move the games because it goes against the board's policy of having all home sporting events being played at the school where the team is located. Board President Joe Kirkpatrick pretty well summed it up when he said that he was the President of the Board of Education, not the Board of Athletics.
Those voting for the motion were Heidi Cook of Toluca, and Tammy Coons and Linda Regnier of Wenona. Those voting against the motion were Tim McNamara of Dana, and Scott Hillenburg, Tom Barth, and Joe Kirkpatrick of Minonk.
