Rep. Kinzinger Statement After Opioid Bill Signed Into Law

Washington, DC - Last week, the President signed into law the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) of 2016. CARA was a culmination of the efforts by an appointed bipartisan conference committee which included Members from both Chambers of Congress. Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) served as a conferee on the committee and helped negotiate the language of the final legislation. CARA marks the nation's most comprehensive opioid addiction legislation in 40 years and the final report also included language from the legislation he introduced, H.R.1818, which helps veteran EMTs transition into civilian EMT jobs desperately needed in communities across the country.
Upon passage of this comprehensive bill, Congressman Kinzinger released the followingstatement.
"I was very pleased to see the President sign CARA into law. There is no question that this important legislation will save lives, and I applaud both chambers for taking a comprehensive approach to expand education, prevention, and treatment of opioid abuse in this country. It was an honor to be part of the conference committee, responsible for negotiating the final language of this bill, and I am deeply proud of the work we did on a bipartisan level on behalf of the American people. I look forward to seeing this law in action as we take a giant step forward in combatting the drug and opioid epidemic."
