Volunteer
workers finished the construction of the Westside Park gazebo on
Saturday. The gazebo was constructed on the site of the former
bandstand that was torn down 8 years ago.
The gazebo
was funded through private donations and from funds left over
from the Westside Park Pavilion fund. It was
constructed of vinyl covered posts and railings and with cedar for the
ceiling and roof. The shingles on the roof match the pavilion
shown here in the background. The picture to the left shows the
roof before it was shingled. The ceiling of the gazebo has the
same finish shown here on the roof.
The material cost for the
gazebo was $8730 and was purchased from All Types Fence, Inc. of
Streator, IL. The City of Minonk paid for the concrete floor
which cost around $1500 and was installed by Rippel Concrete of
Rutland. The gazebo has a 14 foot diameter and has 4 vinyl
covered benches inside.
The volunteers who helped construct
the gazebo were Bob and Mary Hartzler, Todd Hartzler, Mary and Jim
Ford, Jay and Lis Junker, Bud and Bev Riggs, Dean and Shirley Barth,
Nick Pieffer, Glenn Carls, Ted Hartzler, Jerri Sue Johnson, Julia Voss,
and Dave Uphoff.
The completion of the gazebo adds a finishing
touch to the Westside Park and complements the new pavilion
perfectly. Even the roof lines are of the same slope as shown in
the above picture. With the addition of the pavilion and the
gazebo to the Westside Park and the planting of many new trees and
flowers, the park has been restored to the best condition that anyone
can remember. The Westside Park is a great asset to the city and
should be admired and cared for by its citizens.
