On Friday, June 19th, around 8:00 a.m. (after a rainfall) we noticed a
skunk with 4 babies hurrying across our back yard. The mother skunk picked
one of them up and carried it and they all went under a neighbor's shed. A
few minutes later she ran back and brought back a 5th baby, carrying it
the whole way. We didn't get pictures of her and the 4 babies, just her and
the 5th baby she went back for.
Apparently skunks can carry their young like
a cat does, and she kept turning around and checking to make sure they
were following her on the first trip with the 4 babies. When she crawled
over the bottom frame of our swing set she turned and helped the babies get
over it too. We wondered why she didn't go around it but maybe they need to
be kept in a straight line?
It was interesting to watch. Skunks can run
very fast (as this one showed us when she went back for baby #5) and they
appear to be very attentive parents. The neighbors were informed since we
would certainly want to know if we had six skunks under OUR shed!
