Toluca Coal Mine Association is in it’s final stages of preparation for the 2nd Annual Living History Day at the Toluca Jumbo’s on Saturday, May 31st, 2008 from 10 am to 4 pm. The event was so successful last year that the Association will be holding Living History Days for many years to come. This is free to the public. The “Jumbo’s” as citizens of Toluca refer to the slag heaps that hold’s a large piece of Toluca’s History when the town was booming in the coal industry from 1892 to 1925.
The Association along with the City and citizens of Toluca has turned the Jumbo into a historic site with a park, trails, fishing pond, an access for walking to the top of Jumbo, picnic tables and benches.
On May 31st there will be much History being shown through at the Toluca Jumbo’s with demonstrations, exhibits, speakers, games, music, food and drink.
Some of the activities that will be held are blacksmithing, black powder, Long rifles, Barrel making, Buck skinner, Kettle Korn, Bob and Lace maker, Petting Zoo, Spinning Wheel, Looms, Central Wood Turner, Archery, Fiber Artist, Campers which make bread and butter, History buffs, Bow and Arrow maker, Pickin Pals (instrumental’s), Indian History, Pottery, Duck Craver, Quilting, Wood craving, Embroidery, candle making and old time games for the children. The exhibitors and performers will assemble at the Toluca Jumbos from all over the state and have traveled to many locations to show their special talents from days gone by.
New for this year will be a performance by Benjamin Franklin and his wife at Noon and 2 pm and the Pickin Pals will present a musical program at 1 pm.
There will be free samples, items for purchase, a 50/50 raffle and food and drink to purchase. There is something for everyone. Mark the date on your calendar, Saturday, May 31, 2008.
