Weekend rains create flooding in city streets

Monday, February 18, 2008 - Posted 11:39:55 AM
The Minonk area received another inch of rain over the weekend increasing the size of the ponds in the outlying fields and causing flooding in city streets. It has been a long, cold, and wet winter and everyone is really ready for spring this year.

Below is a picture of Washington Street (looking North from 4th & Washington) on Sunday morning (2-17-08). The photo was submitted by Sherry Willis who lives at the corner. Sherry says most of the water will probably end up in her basement.

I would add that I remember the city asking folks to stop littering and please keep the gutters and curbs clear of yard waste.

I noticed our empty lot in Rutland flooded too....and tonight it is frozen. If it were not for the wind chills, it would make an excellent skating opportunity....oh well, perhaps tomorrow.

Just as a not on the comment above that everyone is ready for spring, I for one am not. Not in Minonk anyway. This just reminds me of the water issues yet to come from the rain and storm season that is on its way. I hope this is not a sign of whats to come.

I just wanted to say Thank You to the police officer working Sunday morning. As I was leaving I saw him stop and get a shovel out of his car to clean the drains on my corner.

On my famous corner down the street there was a minor backup of water. It was not due to a full sewer. It was due to leaves and litter blocking all 4 of the corner drains. This is happening just about every time it rains now.
