FHS Dance Team to host competition

Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - Posted 2:00:35 PM
The Fieldcrest High School Dance Team will be hosting its first regional competition in the TEAMDance Illinois (TDI) State Championship Series on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Fieldcrest East Middle School, Wenona.

TDI is a not-for-profit organization in its second year of supporting varsity, junior varsity, junior high, studio and recreational dance and flag teams through education, evaluation and competition. TDI Dance offers competition in pom, open pom, open dance, kick, hip hop and lyrical dance for all varsity and junior varsity teams.

Qualifiers at this and other regional competitions throughout the season will compete at TDI's Varsity State Championship at Carver Arena in the Peoria Civic Center on Sunday, March 2.

New to TDI competitions this year is "Mr. TDI." All schools have a dad, stepdad, grandfather, teen brother, boyfriend or good friend that everyone LOVES to watch dance, and "Mr. TDI" gives them the chance to earn money for their dance team by busting a move to the music of The Village People and MC Hammer. Registration cost is $10 and is open for single performers, duos or trios. All "Mr. TDI" dancers will receive an inflatable hammer and the winner (chosen by ballot voting) will receive a Nike golf baseball cap. Participants may register the day of the competition.

The FHS Dance Team is coached by Tina Fortner. Its members include Bridgett Palmore, Alyssa Kroeschen, Jordan Pohlman, Stephanie Rich, Alicia Mullen, Courtney Spencer, Renae Kirkton, Olivia Nenne, Danielle Sauvageau, Molly Witte, Kaitlyn DeMay, Candis Fyke, Holly Remley, Carrie Flavan, Kim Janssen, Casey Nichols, Kariann Richard, Terra Wells, Marie Tyner, Kara McDonald, Mackenzie Centeno, Kendyll Durst and Heather Olson.

Last year the dance team placed second place at the TDI state competition in Peoria, and fifth at the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) state competition in Champaign. Both placings were in the poms category. This year, the team is presenting a poms dance routine that spotlights songs with, "More cowbell!" and a poms routine that takes its inspiration from the hit musical, "Spamalot." Monty Python fans will recognize a catapulting cow, dancing Knights of the Round Table and an extraordinary rabbit.

The competition is open to the public.

I would like to THANK and COMMEND Coach Fortner and her girls on the dedication and TEAMWORK that goes into preparing for that 3 minute routine, and the hours of hardwork and practice that will get them that supersectional and state qualifing score. I've seen the endless hours of commitment and selflessness that these girls have shown. How EXCITING for us that they were able to bring a competition to the Fieldcrest community, so that we can share in their accomplishments and show our support for the TEAM. How disappointing it is that our home community can't see beyond their own individual ideals and become a part of the whole, a team perhaps. Maybe we need lessons from the FHS Dance TEAM. WE LOVE YOU GIRLS AND ARE VERY PROUD!!!!! GOOD LUCK SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

These kids are great and put many more hours into this program than you could ever imagine. We have dedicated coaches and girls that come back from years past to help out each year. It is a shame that anyone has to bring up what is being held where. I live in Toluca, and I could care less what gym or town this is held in. It is a great opportunity for FIELDCREST and our dance team. Let's support our girls, and have a little fun. GO GIRLS, YOU ARE GREAT!!!

I don't understand why people don't get that having all of these facilities is such an advantage. Fieldcrest is able to host a wide varitey of activities due to the number of gymnasiums! We should be proud of what we have. Good luck to the Fieldcrest dance team!

I agree!!! We need to get rid of everything, and build one huge school in the middle of everyone that accommodates all grade levels. And an after/before school program would be brilliant!!! Oddly, it would probably cost less than what is going on now, and the bickering would likely be limited to a small few. "You can't please all the people all of the time, but . . ."

How about wrote on 1/25/2008 at 10:28:22

We just start all over and build a whole new school with 3 gyms in the middle somewhere, then everyones kids will have to drive down 51 and no town would be a favorite. Then can everyone be HAPPY????? and then maybe the schools could have a before and after school program for the younger kids because finding daycare is getting harder and harder.

Sounds like wrote on 1/25/2008 at 09:26:50

We need another referendum to build another gym

The FHS Dance team began bidding on a TDI competition last spring. They were give dates and the requirements for hosting a competition. One of the requirements was two gyms. For TDI competitions, the team is required to do a complete run through of their routines for the judges to check for penalties. Therefore, they have to have both a prejudging and a competition gym. Since it does not have 2 gyms, the HS could not be used. Tina Fortner consulted with Coach Peterson to find an available date. TDI awarded the team the February 2nd date at East. It would be awesome if the high school had the same facilities as East and West. An additional gym would help with many difficulties such as overlapping boys and girls basketball practice times, dance team practices, cheerleading practices, play practices....all of which are activities that need the gym. Just remember it is all Fieldcrest.

The established TDI cost will be $6 for adults and $5 senior citizens and $4 for students. The competition will run from approximately 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. A more acurate schedule will be posted after Wednesday Jan. 30. To get more information about TDI go to teamdanceillinois.org.

Why not give Toluca a shot at holding a competition there. They have two gyms and help fund the school with their tax dollars.

FHS Parent wrote on 1/24/2008 at 08:42:52

As a parent of one of these girls it is good to see that someone reported about the girls upcoming competition. Personally, I think it is awesome that our community is hosting this event. Our drive will no be long and the girls day will be much shorter also. Many of you may not know but the girls competitions are hours away, this makes for a long day for everyone and a short weekend also. So people be PROUD to be part of all of our communities and stop complaining about where the competitions are being held, be proud we are hosting and you are getting the opportunity to come out and see these girls dance. If you have never been to a competition now is your chance. Come see the FHS Dance team dance it up, eat some popcorn and stick around for the other teams. They are all fun to watch. GO FHS DANCE TEAM!!!!

Wenona's the place !!! wrote on 1/24/2008 at 09:26:33

I really think that everyone needs to look at the whole picture. #1. Wenona seats 1200 people ( I do know that for a fact). Many State tournaments have been held in that gym. #2. If you knew anything about the competition you would know that there needs to be 2 gym's (one for the performance and one for the practice area. Along with a cafeteria, judges rooms, meeting rooms etc. If you look at the facilities anyone who has been to all the schools and a dance competition before would realize the place is have the competition is in Wenona. DUH!!

Good Luck Fieldcrest Dance Team, it will be nice to be able to host a competition within our school district----everyone that is able please show your support to Tina and her Girls!!!

B/F you get mad.. wrote on 1/24/2008 at 05:53:30

it has nothing to do w/ seating and Wenona seats 350-400 more, not double. It is b/c of the two gyms. Good luck girls.

To: FHS Parent wrote on 1/23/2008 at 18:51:26

Isn't the fresh soph tourneyment this weekend in Minonk's gym??

Before you get mad wrote on 1/23/2008 at 19:22:29

To all of those out there that are mad about moving the pom competition to Wenona. Have any of you been in Wenona's gym? It can seat more than double that of the high school. With many fans and competitors expecting to be in attendance, it is a VERY SMART idea to move the competition to Wenona.

FHS parent wrote on 1/23/2008 at 16:26:46

Okay this is getting pretty bad. I wish someone would answer the question why is this high school event being held in Wenona? As far as the website for the high school it does not have anything going on at the high school but that could be wrong because under Saturday activities it does not list this activity. ACTIVITIES FOR SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 2008 HS-V-BB-MCLEAN CNTY/HOIC TOURN-(AWAY) HS-V-GB-MCLEAN CNTY/HOIC TOURN-(AWAY) HS-CHEERLEADING-SECTIONALS-LIMESTON/BARTONVILLE CUBSCOUT SETUP Does Wenona have some pull on this or what?? Wonder why this is Wenona?? Can someone answer this?

Time or Cost??? wrote on 1/23/2008 at 16:53:55

Is there a time? And is there a cost to come watch? Also, good luck FHS!!!

sick of it already wrote on 1/23/2008 at 15:13:44

last time I checked, the coach of the dance team lived in minonk.....and perhaps the minonk gym was already spoken for?? quit bickering and support YOUR girls, regardless of what town they or the competition is in.

GO KNIGHTS wrote on 1/23/2008 at 16:19:50

GO FIGURE !!!! wrote on 1/23/2008 at 14:45:35

YET ANOTHER HIGH SCHOOL SPORT EVENT BEING HELD IN WENONA. WHAT IS UP WITH THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT???? ARE YOU ASHAMED OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL THAT YOU CAN NOT HOLD EVENTS IN THE TOWN THAT THE SCHOOL IS IN? IF WENONA IS SO IMPORTANT THEN LETS GET THEM PAYING THEIR FAIR SHARE OF TAXES (PRESENT AND PAST). BUT ON A POSITIVE NOTE --- WE ARE VERY PROUD OF FHS DANCE TEAM. GOOD LUCK AT THE COMPETITON !!!!
