It was another eventful year in our fair community, As we were presented with many an opportunity, Starting with a new fitness center in the former VFW hall, Where one can exercise and make the weight fall;A new superintendent was hired at Fieldcrest High, To balance the budget he will give it a try, Which is a mighty challenge one must admit, Since the decline in property values just won't quit; The school board was split on the attendance center fuss, Refusing to admit that further consolidation was a must, Instead agreeing to merge the fifth grades only, And making the board's actions seem silly; The mayoral race couldn't have been much hotter, As Bill Koos beat out Mayor Mark Spencer, Minonk added only one school board member we must note, With too many candidates splitting up the vote; Candidate signs were torn up by vandals, Whose brains must have melted like candles, The Kent Lumber building was reduced to a pit, And Police Chief Butler decided to quit;

The city was given an offer it couldn't turn down, To allow a new racetrack at the north edge of town, With promises of revenue the city fathers were panting, But so far nothing appears to be happening; The Westside Park is becoming the place to go, With the pavilion and a brand new gazebo, Jason Gerdes donated many trees to the city again, And is help turning Minonk into a virtual arboretum; The Fourth of July festivities was enjoyed by all, Followed by Minonk Days, and that's not all, A circus came to town in September, And the Parade of Lights in December; The Shell Truck Stop took on a new shine, With a new owner who didn't mind spending a dime, Cattails were removed from the Motel 6 pond, But I bet they'll be back again before long; The area suffered through a hot and dry summer, Making the farmers crops a real bummer, Hopefully, things will be better next year, As the roar of the dragstrip will be music to our ear;
