Time to plant trees |

About Town Dave Uphoff ![]() |
With the coming of autumn now is a good time to plant a shade tree.
In a few weeks most trees will have shed their leaves and will enter a
period of dormancy until next April. The area nurseries are busy digging trees to be sold.
The fall is a good time to plant trees because
the roots will continue to grow and will enable the tree to get off to a fast start next spring.
It is advisable to plant decidious trees rather than evergreen trees in the autumn.Rolex Replica Watches Evergreen trees planted late may not acclimate well enough before the ground freezes. Based on my thirty years of tree planting and also on research I have done I would like to recommend trees for this area. If a tree name is underlined you can click on the name and link to a picture of the tree. My favorite tree is the sugar maple because of its dense foliage and deep green color and also because it has a brilliant orange-red color in the fall. The best varieties to plant is the Green Mountain sugar maple and the Legacy sugar maple. There are 4 of these trees planted along the south side of the Minonk township cemetery right north of the baseball field. The red maple is also a good tree to plant because of its brilliant red fall color. The two best varieties of red maples are the Red Sunset and the October Glory. Norway maples are also good trees because of their deep green dense foliage and rounded shape. The best variety of norway maple to plant is the Emerald Lustre norway maple. Another good tree is the little-leaved linden. This tree also has dense foliage with a conical shape. The best variety of linden to plant is the Greenspire linden. A row of these trees are along the east side of Chestnut Street in the 600 block downtown. Ash trees grow good in this area and are faster growing than the oaks and maples. Ash trees branches tend to extend upward whereas the maple and lindens tend to grow outward. The ash tree is more airy and has more of a filtered shade than the maples. Ash tree leaves are long and thinner than maples and turn yellow in the fall. The Autum Purple ash is a good variety that has a purple fall color. Also, the Patmore ash tree has a nice deep green glossy leaf. My favorite ash tree is the Urbanite ash tree because of its dense foliage and formal shape. There are 11 Urbanite ash trees planted along the berm of the downtown parking lot in Minonk. Oak trees are the longest living trees and do well in this area. Richard Mille Replica Watches It takes a little longer to establish an oak but they still grow fairly fast when they are young. This is a tree to plant for your grandchildren. My favorite oak tree is the Swamp White Oak tree. This tree has big dark green glossy leaves that are light green on the underside. Another good oak is the red oak. It grows faster than the other oaks and provides filtered shade. There is a 25 year old red oak tree in front of 518 Johnson Street. All of the above trees can become up to 70 feet in height and should be planted at least 30 feet from any building and should not be planted under any utility lines. |
If your space is restricted there are some smaller trees that are recommended. The ornamental pear trees are very nice because of their
glossy leaf, dense formal shape and their white flowers in the spring. The Chanticleer pear tree is my favorite because it doesn't grow over 30 feet
and doesn't split like the more popular Bradford pear. There are a row of Bradford pear trees planted along the north side of the
Minonk Township Cemetery.
Another small tree to consider is the Japanese Tree Lilac. It doesn't get over 30 feet tall and has leaves similiar to a lilac bush and has lilac flowers in the spring but does not have the same scent. The pyramidal european hornbeam is very compact and has a formal sheared look to it. It is a slow grower but is a very distinctive tree that would enhance any landscape. Finally, the magnolia tree doesn't grow very tall and has beautiful pinkish white flowers in the spring. The tree also has an interesting branch structure with large glossy leaves. The tree is a slow grower but is a very striking tree to have in your landscape. The saucer magnolia tree is the best variety to plant in this area. I do not recommend any flowering crab trees because they so often are afflicted with a fungus that causes them to lose their leaves in the middle of the summer. A Kousa dogwood tree would be a good substitute if you want an early flowering tree. All of these trees can be bought at local nurseries. I have been buying most of my trees at the Tonica Nursery because they have a good variety and also because they are less expensive than the Bloomington and Peoria nurseries. I prefer buying bigger trees from nurseries rather than the potted trees that are cheaper at Walmart. The trees are of better quality and will have a much better chance of surviving. Also, Walmart does not have a very good selection of trees. Kenny Alleman, president of Tonica Nurseries, said he would give people from Minonk a break on prices of trees if I agreed to publicize his nursery on the internet. So, if you want to get trees at a bargain I recommend that you go to the Tonica Nursery and ask for Kenny. Tell him that you are from Minonk and Dave Uphoff said that he would give you a special price on trees. I cannot promise you that he will follow through but I buy plenty of trees from him and I would think that he would keep his end of the bargain. Kenny said that he would sell balled and burlapped trees that have a 2 inch diameter trunk at the bottom that are about 8-10 feet tall. They are not potted trees. He said he would sell ashes, lindens, norway maples, locusts and the smaller ornamental trees for $90. He will charge $120 for the sugar maples, red maples, and the oak trees. These prices are about $50 cheaper than if you bought the trees in Bloomington or Peoria. Also, you can go in the fields and tag your own tree if you ask. I encourage everyone to go out and buy some trees this fall and help beautify Minonk. The difference between a regular town and a beautiful town is the quality of its trees and landscaping. If you don't have room for a tree, buy one for the parks in Minonk. If everyone pitches in, we can easily beautify Minonk. |
