Time for a break

This is my 170th editorial since this website originated on January 21, 2001. It also will be my last editorial for awhile as I have decided to take a breather and reduce the scope of the MinonkTalk website for the remainder of the summer. I literally have run out of ideas and things to write about. I have expressed my opinion on many subjects many times and I don't want to keep repeating myself. I do not have the time to do research on topics in order to write more in depth editorials. I would rather not write anything at all than to write on something in which I do not have all of the facts.

You probably have noticed that most of my editorials are based on my opinions on current events or my recollection of memories from the past. I do not pass myself off as a professional writer like George Will but more of a commentator like Andy Rooney. Nevertheless, opinions at the local level are important because they reflect sentiment on local issues that George Will couldn't care less about. Therefore, I will publish editorials from viewers who wish to express their views or relate a story. I will, of course, have the option of rejecting an editorial that I feel is not appropriate.

I have spent an average of 15-20 hours a week for the past 3 and 1/2 years keeping this website updated. It has been a personally rewarding experience and I am grateful to my viewers for their support and their contributions. Running this website has taken a toll on both my personal time and on my profession, however, and I feel that it is necessary to devote more time to these other areas of my life.

For the remainder of this summer, this website will no longer do active reporting on local news and events. For some reason, this website never attained the status of a legitimate media outlet. News releases and announcements sent to other media were never sent to this website. The one exception is Senator Dan Rutherford's press releases. However, if someone wishes to send reports on news events, they will be published. Finally, recipes, jokes, and items of interest submitted by viewers will also be discontinued until further notice.

The most popular section of this web site is the email. Emails will continue to be published. In effect, this web site will continue to be a forum for public comment. However, I will have no input into these comments.

The second most popular section is the editorials. The third most popular section of the website and the basis for creating this website in the first place is the old photographs. I will continue to update the old photographs as they come in. The classified ads will also remain active.

When this website resumes full publication this fall, it will be in a format that will allow the viewers to provide the input to the website. I cannot make this website any better on my own simply because I do not have the time. Under the new format this coming autumn, the website will be based more on viewer input and less on my involvement. Hopefully, that will make for a better website.

I thank everyone for their participation in MinonkTalk. Have a great summer and I will see you in the fall.
