Time to celebrate our past

This coming weekend Minonk will celebrate its 150th birthday as a city. I urge all residents and former residents to come to Minonk to help celebrate its sesquicentennial. Minonk did not celebrate its 100th anniversay in 1954. We are trying to make up for that omission by making Minonk's sesquicentennial celebration a really great event.

A lot of people have put a lot of effort into making this celebration something special. This year's carnival promises to be one of the best carnivals ever. There will be plenty of historical displays in the various buildings downtown. A video of old Minonk photographs will be shown at 466 Chestnut Street next to Kathy's Kitchen. Dedication ceremonies for both the new Millennia Park and the Westside Park pavilion will be held and a tour of the Minonk cemetery will be held. In short, there will be plenty of unique events. To view the complete schedule of events, click here.

This will be an opportunity for most people to see for the first time what Minonk used to be like many years ago. There will be plenty of old photos and artifacts never seen before. Hopefully, the youth in our city will be able to see what a great little city Minonk was many years ago. Also, hopefully, this will instill a sense of pride and optimism in our community.

Last fall when working on the pavilion in the Westside Park, some out-of-town volunteer workers commented to me on what a nice park and residential community we have. As I have said many times, Minonk was and still is the best residential community in Central Illinois. We need to remind ourselves of our wonderful past so that we can strive to keep Minonk a great community.

The weather promises to be great next weekend. Get out and mingle. The city will be packed with former residents returning to their hometown to celebrate its history. Let's all get together and welcome them back and show them that Minonk is still the great little town that they left years ago.
