Let's get ready for the sesquicentennial

Minonk's sesquicentennial celebration is less than 5 weeks away. The sesquicentennial committee is working feverishly to make this a celebration that everyone will enjoy and remember. Committee Chairman Cathy McKay has done a great job of pulling the celebration together. However, the committee needs more volunteers to help run the events on the weekend of June 11-13.

The sesquicentennial committee needs people to help man the ticket booths at the carnival. In addition, people are needed to help host some of the special events. A DVD pictoral history of Minonk will be shown in the store next to Kathy's Kitchen on South Chestnut and people are needed to help run the DVD projector.

The sesquicentennial committee has worked hard to provide unique events and to display Minonk history. Now is the time for the citizens of Minonk to step up to the plate and help to make this sesquicentennial celebration a truly great event by volunteering to help out during the celebration. Minonk did not hold a centennial celebration in 1954. So we are trying to make up for that omission by making the sesquicentennial celebration something special. Those who wish to participate in the sesquicentennial celebration should contact Cathy McKay at 309/432-2605.

I urge former Minonk residents to return to the city during the celebration to view the renewal of Minonk. The city has a new park at the north of town that will be dedicated on June 12 and a new pavilion in the old city park that will be dedicated on June 13. Main street will be resurfaced and a citizens committee will be holding block parties to clean up each neigborhood. In short, Minonk will be looking its best during the sesquicentennial celebration.

We are going to forget about our problems in Iraq and our school funding crisis. We are going to celebrate the history of a great little city that is still the best town around. No town of its size has the character of Minonk with its brick streets and wonderful old homes. The city is growing again with new houses going up at the fastest rate ever. Minonk's future is bright with its location on an interstate highway and its proximity to all of the major employment centers in Central Illinois.

This website will post the events for the celebration this week and will keep it updated. Let's all get into the sesquicentennial mood by volunteering to help and by attending the many events that are scheduled. Rediscover Minonk's wonderful past and celebrate its future. Its homecoming time for all Minonk natives.
