Congratulations to Fieldcrest Scholastic Bowl Team

      Editor: Dave Uphoff
Congratulations go to the Fieldcrest Middle School Scholastic Bowl team which advanced to the Illinois Elementary School Association State Final Scholastic Bowl Tournament. While Fieldcrest did not win the state title, the fact that they were able to advance to the state finals and beat much bigger schools is quite an accomplishment. Fieldcrest coach Nancy Reiter deserves recognition for her motivational skills that inspired her students to achieve such great success.

Traditionally, students revere and look up to those who achieve athletic success. I hope that those students who were members of the Scholastic Bowl team are also held in similar respect by their peers. While not down playing the success of the athletes, it must be remembered that the attributes that enabled the Scholastic Bowl team to be successful will be invaluable to the careers of the team members. Wouldn't it be great to be known as the BMOC (Big Man on Campus) because of your academic achievement?

While Fieldcrest's predecessor, Minonk-Dana-Rutland, did not produce very many professional athletes, there have been a great number of students who went on to be extremely successful in their chosen career. Hopefully, Fieldcrest will continue that tradition.

City wide cleanup woes

There were some grumblings about last week's Spring Cleanup days by both citizens and the city. Apparently, the cleanup by Titan Environmental Services took a lot longer than anticipated as they had to come back a third day to finish the cleanup. One of the problems was due to the excessive amount of junk left by some residents that required a lot more time for pickup. This may be the reason that Tomlinson Disposal, who has done the cleanup in the prior years, submitted a bid that was almost twice the amount by Titan who did this year's cleanup.

The cleanup project is a valuable service that benefits the residents and helps keep the city looking clean. The city council should establish some standards as to what and how much people can leave out for pickup so that the cleanup people can finish the job within the allotted time frame. If not, the city may find that it will have to pay a lot more to provide this service for residents in the future.
