In any business or organization, matters of personnel can represent the most challenging of all management issues. A qualified staff can make an organization excel, while an inferior staff can drag processes to unimaginable lows.
As a parent, my perspective of how the school board operates is based on what I read. I attempt to ignore what I hear. I admit that this hardly qualifies me as an informed parent, for if I were truly committed I would attend board meetings. However, I am a firm believer that people should be left to do the task that they are hired/elected to do. Results should be judged at hiring/election times. There are occasions however, when I am compelled to impart my opinions, thus going against my aforementioned policy. Such is the case today. I was saddened to hear of the loss of Bill Seifert to the El Paso school district. My wife and I firmly believe that Mr. Siefert is an asset to our district. He has managed to bring a level of discipline, understanding and interest to an institution that is at times, extremely archaic and stale. I was also concerned when I read of Mr. Achelpohl’s impending departure. However, what troubles me most is the method by which some replacements will be sought. In the private sector people who are “promoted from within” staff numerous organizations. There are many logical reasons for this. Organizational cultures are inherently understood, in addition to processes and product knowledge being in place. One of the unsupported features of “promotion from within” is the positive effect it has on morale. People like to know that they can reach higher levels of success, without creating major change in their personal lives. |
I understand that the School Board has elected to use an outside source for their hiring process in some high level areas. I disagree with this for a variety of reasons. I believe that we, as a school community should look within our organization first and give opportunities to qualified personnel. I don’t believe that current Fieldcrest employees should be given anything less than all opportunities and/or preferential treatment for application submission. If we can’t trust and support our current staff, why do we have them, and whom can we trust and support? I am sure that there are logistical reasons why we use an outside firm, not the least of which is time. In addition, there are other processes that must be considered such as background investigations. However, I also believe that a board is elected to work through those details, and be involved throughout each process, regardless of time demands. This is especially true in light of our current economic situation.
And I’ll go one step further. I am aware of bright, talented Fieldcrest staff that would make excellent administrators in our district. Teachers like Mr. DeMay and Mr. DiMascio who have shown leadership and dedication, setting excellent examples for teachers and students alike. I urge the board to look at these gentlemen, and any other Fieldcrest staff in order to keep our hiring costs low, retain our talent, and keep our staff and students motivated. |
