Let's clean up the garbage

About
Town

Dave Uphoff

Minonktalk has received numerous complaints about the garbage and litter at the Shell Truck Stop and restaurant in the Caroline Development at the I-39 exit. Acting on these complaints I mentioned this to the city council a couple of times at their regular sessions. The litter still remained.

My next attempt to get some action was to call Mr. Chuck Feeney who is the developer of the truck stop complex. Mr. Feeney stated that he was unaware of the litter problem and would get right on it the next day. This was last Tuesday. Today (Monday) I took a drive out to the truck stop and the litter is still there.

The area north of the truck stop is a disgusting mess. It makes the Pontiac landfill look like the botanical gardens. Piles of dirt everywhere sprinkled with all kinds of rubbish. I wonder if Mr. Feeney would allow this type of negligence to occur if this truck stop was in his home town of El Paso? What kind of impression does this make to an out-of-town visitor to Woody's restaurant? They will probably think twice before they stop again.

I took some pictures of the open dumpsters which are supposed to be closed as well as the litter surrounding the area. Open garbage was sitting right in back of the convenience store. Both times I went to take pictures I saw cars parked in front of the dumpsters. It appeared that someone was dumping their garbage in those dumpsters. I don't know if they were local or from somewhere else.

Minonk has a litter ordinance and it should be enforced. Minonk police should patrol the area to see if unauthorized people are using the truck stop dumpsters. The litter problem will not only drive away customers from the restaurant but also from the new Motel 6. Minonk cannot afford to lose any potential sales revenue from these businesses. I am sure that the owner of the Motel 6 is not too happy to see the unkempt appearance of the truck stop, especially since the motel has been nicely landscaped.

I also asked Mr. Feeney about his plans for landscaping. He indicated they plan on doing some landscaping this year. If the followup to his landscaping plans are anything like his followup on the litter problem, you can expect to see a nice bloom of dandelions this year around Woody's restaurant.

High School trophies

With the resignation of Dr. John Capasso as the Fieldcrest Superintendent and with the election of a new school board the time is right to resolve the high school trophy controversy. Dr. Capasso's insistence that we need to forget the past and display the trophies anyplace except the gymnasium does not set well with Minonk residents.

High school trophies should be displayed in schools or gymnasiums, not in banks or libraries. I suggest that trophies from all the Fieldcrest communities be displayed in the High School gymnasium. The first place trophies can be displayed on a rotating basis. Their presence in the gymnasium should be an inspiration to Fieldcrest athletics who wish to aspire to the greatness of the championship teams from the past not only from Minonk, but also Toluca, Wenona, Rutland and Dana. Isn't that the best way to display our solidarity?

Isn't this pretty?

Open dumpsters shown here allow garbage to blow away.

Another uncovered garbage container.

This picture doesn't show how ugly the litter really is. You have to see it in person to appreciate it.
