Minonk's sport trophies |

About Town Dave Uphoff ![]() |
A few people have inquired about the whereabouts of the many sports trophies that
were won by the Minonk, Minonk-Dana and Minonk-Dana-Rutland teams of the past. When
the Fieldcrest school district was consolidated in 1992, the trophies were removed from
the trophy cases in the high school and the gymnasium.
In a conversation with Dr. John Capasso, Fieldcrest Superintendent, he explained that the trophies were offered to the City of Minonk so that they could be displayed at City Hall. Capasso explained that the school even offered to build the display cases for the city. No reason was given for the City not accepting the offer. The trophies were also offered to the Filger Library and to the Alpha Community Bank and the offers were turned down, according to Dr. Capasso, because they did not have the space to display the trophies. Dr. Capasso stated that the Fieldcrest School Board decided not to display the trophies at the Fieldcrest High School gymnasium because it may cause a rift with the other communities who may want to display their trophies there also. It appears that this decision was based on that fact that we now have a new school district and to display or promote any of the antecendant schools trophies would be counter-productive to the goal of solidarity among the communities that make up the Fieldcrest School District. However, there are some Minonk residents who I know feel strongly about displaying the trophies in the Fieldcrest High School gymnasium. Their logic is based on the fact that those trophies were won by teams that played in that gymnasium and to deny their presence there is to deny that Minonk ever had any sports teams prior to 1992.

Meanwhile the Minonk school trophies have been stored in the attic of the bus barn at the High School
for the last ten years. Toluca has their trophies displayed in
the local bank and Wenona has their trophies displayed in the Wenona library. Why is Minonk
so indifferent to the displaying of its trophies?
What do we do? I am not suggesting the solution. Rather, I prefer to offer the different solutions available and hope that the citizens of Minonk voice their preference. Here are the options. (1) Have the trophies displayed in Minonk City Hall. (2) Have them displayed in the Fieldcrest High School gymnasium. (3) Have them displayed in the proposed new Minonk Community Center as suggested by Dr. Capasso. (4) Have them displayed in another site we haven't thought of. (5) Auction them off. (6) Leave them in the bus barn. I urge Minonk citizens to think about the alternatives and voice your opinion to either your councilman or to the school board. You also may email me your opinion and it will be published in the email section of this web site. In any case, it is time we take action. It is a shame that we as a community have not resolved this situation before now. |
