Why are we doing this?

About
Town

Dave Uphoff

People have asked me why I started up this website. In brief it is because I believe in Minonk. I want this web page to be the catalyst to unite our community to make Minonk a better place to live; to recapture the spirit that made Minonk the best "little city" in Central Illinois.

I am old enough (59) to remember what Minonk was like years ago. From the email and comments I have received from former residents I can tell that they too had fond memories of Minonk as a great town to grow up in.

I also know that there are many people who moved to Minonk in the past 20 years who do not share my feelings. So I was heartened to receive this email from a "non-native" resident.

"I think this site is a great idea and help boast our town's good feelings..something I think we really need. I keep hearing from people--this used to be a better town. Well I wasn't here then. I have been a resident for a little over 15 years now...One thing I like about Minonk is that people mind their own business unless one is doing something to hurt people. I like that. I am glad politics is going to be kept out of this web site, and that is a sounding board for everyone. Thanks for starting this up."
This kind of testimony tells me that people do want to help make Minonk better. The power of the internet will provide the means to that end.

The history section of this web page can give us a sense of appreciation towards Minonk's past. Hopefully, this can help us avoid some of the mistakes from the past and plan better for the future. We can try to save some of Minonk's historical items instead of letting them become destroyed through our benign neglect.

Each week we will be adding more Minonk history to the web page. Already we have received history stories from former residents and hope to continue receiving many more. In effect, we are building an online encyclopedia of Minonk history that everyone can access at any time. There are hundreds of stories and photographs that are waiting to be put on this web site, time permitting.

I would like to thank those who have sent in corrections to the web page. Also, I wish to thank Donna Rae Eilts for her excellent editing of these pages. Those original spelling errors were mine. Have a good week.
