Help build Minonk's pavilion

What?

Your donation is needed to replace the bandstand in the Westside Park.

Why?

1. The original bandstand was built as a memorial for World War I veterans, funded by the women of Minonk in 1922. It is our duty to preserve the memory of those who died for our country.

2. There is a need for a place to accommodate picnics, reunions, and other social gatherings in our community.

3. The park needs proper restroom facilities.

4. The pavilion will improve the appearance of the park and will reflect favorably on the city.

History

The bandstand in the Westside Park was built in 1922 as a memorial for World War I veterans. The women of Minonk raised the money for the bandstand. For years the bandstand was the focal point of the park and was the scene of band concerts, Fourth of July celebrations and other shows.

A group was originally formed by Judy Reeser, Clara Fewell, and Dave Uphoff to restore and preserve the bandstand in the Westside Park. In 1997 the bandstand was in an advanced state of disrepair and had to be removed.

A committee appointed by the city council is now making a commitment to replace the bandstand with a pavilion. Currently, the committee has raised approximately $9,000 for the proposed pavilion. The state will provide $5,000 and the city will provide $32,000. The anticipated cost of the pavilion is $80,000. This means that $34,000 must be raised from private donations in order to complete the pavilion.

The pavilion

The World War I plaque from the old bandstand will be placed in the inner wall of the pavilion. The pavilion will be owned by the City of Minonk and will be maintained by the Department of Public Works.

Plans are to start construction in the fall of 2002 and have the pavilion ready for use in the Spring of 2003. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for July 4, 2003 in which all donors will be officially recognized

How can I help?

The completion of the proposed pavilion for the Westside Park will depend on donations from private citizens like you. This is an opportunity for you to make a contribution to the community that will benefit everyone. To make sure that your tax deductable donation will not go unrecognized, a list of all donors will be published on the Minonk Talk web site and also printed in the Woodford County Journal.

Those who donate $500 or more will have their name and the amount donated inscribed on a plaque that will be placed on the inner wall of the pavilion.
