Peoria Heights - Rachel Wylie Spaniol-Olsson, age 62, of Peoria Heights passed away Friday, July 10, 2009, at 1:08 p.m. at her home after a six-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born Oct. 30, 1946, in Bloomington, Ill., to James and Margaret (Wells) Wylie. She married Lyle W. Spaniol in 1971 in Bloomington, Ill.; he survives. She later married Phillip James "Jim" Olsson, M.D., on June 5, 1997, in Lincoln, Ill.
Surviving are two sons, Darin W. (Beth) Spaniol of Bloomington and James W. (Sara) Spaniol of South Elgin, Ill.; three stepsons, Phillip D. Olsson of Bloomington, Ind., James Scott (Jackie) Olsson of Laurel, Md., and Daniel Coe Olsson of Peoria Heights; seven grandchildren, Morgan and Kelsey Spaniol of Bloomington, Ill., Megan and Jacob Spaniol of South Elgin, and Kephas, Felicity and Philomena Olsson, all of Laurel, Md.; two brothers, James Kerrick Rick Wylie of Lebanon, Ind., and Wells (Wendy) Wylie of Peoria; and a nephew, James Harrison Wylie of Peoria.
Rachel was a registered nurse, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Illinois Wesleyan School of Nursing. She worked in Home Health and then helped develop the Hospice program in the Bloomington/Normal area. She was Camp Nurse for Bloomington/Normal Easter Seals for 20 years.
She opened The Rocking Horse children's clothing store at Kent's Crossing in Normal, Ill., and ran that for about seven years. She then returned to nursing, serving in dialysis in various capacities, including nursing care manager of the Midwest Kidney Center, Bloomington/Normal unit. When she retired from nursing in the late 1990s, she was working as an acute dialysis nurse at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Rachel was a member of Northwoods Community Church in Dunlap, Peoria Medical Society Alliance, Peoria Entrez Nous, PEO Chapter (formerly OC) currently AH.
Visitation will be Monday, July 13, 2009, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Northwoods Community Church. Additional visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to the Phillip and Marion Olsson Musical Scholarship through the SIU Foundation.
