Phyllis M. Matter, 87 - December 24, 2010

Phyllis M. Matter, 87, of Minonk passed away at 2 p.m. Friday (Dec. 24, 2010) at Meadows Mennonite Home, rural Chenoa, where she was a resident.

She was born on Nov. 12, 1923, in Ransom, a daughter of John and Mary Kloepper Voigts. She married Melvin H. Matter on March 1, 1953, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Ransom. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Judith Matter of Nashville, Tenn., and Janis (Michael) Megow of Dana; two grandchildren, John and Carolyn Megow of Dana; one brother, Charles “Bill” Voigts of Joliet; and one sister, Marie Thomas of Yorkville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Donald, Lewis and John Voigts; and one sister, Louise Weber.

Phyllis graduated from Streator High School in 1943. She worked for nine years as a cashier for JC Penney. She then worked for the Streator Water Company until 1955 and served as a rural mail carrier for Rutland and Dana for 16 years.

She enjoyed going to church, playing games with her grandchildren, traveling to different places on vacation, gardening, keeping a diary, bookkeeping, visiting relative and friends, and homemaking.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of the Dana Homemakers Club.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home, Minonk. The Rev. Charles Buegel will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Wednesday. Burial will be in Minonk Township Cemetery.
