Jon Johnson, 78 - January 17, 2015

Shorewood, IL - Jon Richard Johnson, 78, died at his home on January 17, 2015.  He was born January 28, 1936 in the house on the corner of W. 6th and Lincoln in Minonk to Grace Minnie Wyman Johnson and John Henry Johnson.

He was preceded in death by parents, John H and Grace Johnson, Grandparents, Minnie and John H. Wyman, brother Eugene A. Johnson. He is survived by wife Carol J. Otto Johnson, 3 children, Jeffrey R. of Indianapolis, IN, Gregory S. of Tokyo, Japan, Suzetta L. Wilson of Austin, TX and 7 grandchildren,  Benjamin R. Johnson of Austin, TX, Emma N. Johnson of Bloomington, IN, Naoya S. Johnson and Erica Johnson of Tokyo, Japan, Michael A., Stephen T. and Sarah N. Wilson of Austin, TX and a sister Janice Johnson Ripley Campbell . 

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Church of Christ in Minonk and was educated in Minonk schools where he graduated from high school  in 1954 after participating in all sports, music and drama.  He helped his parents clean the church, sang in the choir, and rang the bells on Sunday mornings.  He had many odd jobs as a youth: paper delivery, bakery, grocery store, snow shoveling, working in the farm fields, and working on a rail road section gang in the summers. 

He attended Knox College in Galesburg, IL and was a member of Alpha Delta Epsilon Fraternity.  After his freshman year he joined the Army, returned and went to Illinois State Normal University for a degree in Education.  He taught in the MDR junior high and then in Benson.  He went on to work at General Telephone in Kewanee, IL and then joined the Air Force through OTS.  He was assigned to Minot AF Base and was on a Minuteman Missile Crew, sent to Kadena AFB to serve on a Missile Crew and returned to Penn State U on the AFIT program to get a degree in Computer Science.

He retired from the Air Force in 1981 and was hired at Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center as assistant director of Computing Services. He moved to Joliet, IL and became Director of Informational Services at Joliet Junior College and retired again.  He moved to Texas in 2005 and lived in Pflugerville and Buda before returning to IL in 2010 where he died after a 3 year battle with lung cancer. 

He loved Classical music and current events and football. 
Saturdays were spent watching Oklahoma Sooners, Penn State Nittany Lions, U of I and U of TX Cowboys  playing football.

Memorial Services will be held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ at 1 P.M. on Wed, Jan 28, Jon's 79th birthday.  Visitation will be in Joliet at Fred Dames Funeral Home at the corner of Black and Essington on Jan 29, 3-7.
