Richard E. "Pops" Christ, 71 - April 11, 2007

WENONA - Richard E. "Pops" Christ, 71, of 114 N. Hickory St., Wenona, died at 5:26 p.m. Wednesday (April 11, 2007) at BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, shortly after arrival.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Minonk with the Rev. Craig Swenson officiating. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Wenona. Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. today at the church. Hurst Funeral Home, Wenona, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Christ was born in Toluca on Nov. 25, 1935, son of Elmer and Henrietta Pelz Christ. He married Marilyn Winkel on Aug. 4, 1957.

He served with the Army National Guard in the late 1950s. He retired from Owens Glass Co. in Streator. He owned and operated Pops Sweet Shop in Minonk for the past four years. He and his wife operated the Snack Shack in Wenona for 23 years working with the auctioneers Leonard Stonier, Ron Schmidgal and Cal Kaufman.

He served on the Wenona City Council. He was a volunteer for the BroMenn Medical Center. He was a member of the Minonk Businessmen's Association. He was an organ donor.

He is survived by three daughters, Shelly Butler and Kelly (Mike) Seggerman, both of Minonk; and Tammy (Mark) Bernardoni, Oglesby; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Cheryl (Bob) Russow, Joliet; one brother, Don (Sharon) Christ, Toluca; and a special friend Phyliss Ashelman and her daughter Dory.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 9, 2001; one grandson; and one brother.

Pallbearers will be Mark Bernardoni, Mike Seggerman, Bob Jackson, Bill Simmons, Russ Skaggs, Tom Colgan, Stacey Hudson and John Weisenhofer.
