Alvin C. Vissering, 76, of 114 Cedar Lane, Minonk, died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday (March 2, 2003) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Minonk, the Rev. Craig Swenson officiating. Burial will be in Minonk Township Cemetery, Minonk, with military rites by Minonk VFW Post 7185. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, Minonk, and for one hour before the funeral Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Minonk Ambulance Fund and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He was born July 13, 1926, in Cabery, a son of Folkert and Gertie Eden Vissering. He married Joyce Reiner on June 21, 1953, in Benson. She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kim (Dean) Backer, Roanoke; one son, Craig (Michele) Vissering, El Paso; and five grandchildren, Ashley, Jessica, and Natalie Backer; and Josh and Joel Vissering.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Randy Vissering in 1984; and one sister, Darlene Stith.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Minonk, where he served as chairman of the building committee for the church.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Minonk VFW Post 7185. He was a project manager for Snyder Corporation in Bloomington, retiring in 2002. He had formerly worked for Dell Construction Company, Washington.

He was a former mayor of Minonk.

Alvin enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling. He loved his children and grandchildren, and will be missed by all who knew him.
