Council amends ordinance limiting building size

Monday, December 25, 2006 - Posted 5:30:13 PM
The Minonk City Council amended Ordinance 2000-08 Section 17.03.06 to regulate the size of buildings for accessory uses in the R-1 Residential district. The amendment was worded as follows: Notwithstanding Section 17.03.15 Maximum Building/Structure Coverage of this code, the sixty (60) percent of the primary structure maximum size allowable for the combination of all detached structures stated above shall be waived if the total of all buildings and structures located on a lot do not exceed ten(10) percent coverage of the total lot area. If the 60% clause stated in this section is waived, no individual accessory building or structure may have a footprint exceeding 1,250 square feet. In other business the Council discussed the problem of unpaid water bills. Alderman Sean Cunningham  said that the consensus from the last Finance Committee meeting is to raise the deposit to $75.00 at turn on and $75.00 with the first bill for a total of $150.00 deposit versus the present $75.00 deposit for renters.

Cunningham said that the City over the past 18 months has been stiffed to the tune of about $5,000. He said the city needs to either collect the unpaid bills ourselves or contract a collection agency to do that for us.

Mayor Bill Koos said the city needs to get a legal opinion on a using a collection agency and to see that the City Collector (Bobbie Evans) has the tools to get the necessary information to turn over to a collection agency.  Koos added that another option is a compromise in which the city collects the money for the landlord through a collection agency and reimburses the landlord.

The council agreed to revisit the collection issue in 30 days to allow more time for research on the subject.
