City restricts use of hydrants for bulk sale of water

Saturday, July 21, 2007 - Posted 6:03:37 PM

The Minonk City Council approved a motion to allow the bulk filling of water into tanks or swimming pools from the city fire hydrants only if the City's bulk fill supply is not in operating form.  In addition the Council approved a motion to make bulk water available at the pump house at a rate of $1.00 per 100 gallons (13.37 cubic feet).  Arrangements must be made with the Public Works Department.  Bulk water sales from fire hydrants are prohibited when the pump house is operational.  Earlier this year residents were filling their swimming pools from the city fire hydrants and then paying the city for the amount of water.

There were questions as to why the bulk fill supply was not working.  Alderman Sean Cunningham said his understanding was that the coin dispenser was not working and was being used improperly because there was no directions there to explain how to use it.

Public Works Manager Charlie McGuire said that he can put directions on the dispenser explaining how to use it properly.  He also said that when he came back from vacation he saw that part of the coin operated mechanism was unplugged and was not sure how that happened.  McGuire said, "Once it was plugged in properly, we have not had any trouble since to my knowledge.  The dispenser will take either tokens or quarters."

Mayor Bill Koos asked McGuire to put a set of instructions at the coin operated bulk water fill at the pump house and also asked that a set of instructions also be available at City Hall and that a copy be given to people when they purchase tokens for the bulk fill at City Hall.

Public Comments

Larry Hill (403 Walnut Street) asked if the City had ever considered oil and chipping Elm Street from Sixth Street to Eighth Street.  Mayor Koos responded that it would it would have to be looked at in the budget process.

What difference does it make if the water comes from the bulk fill station or a fire hydrant?? Not everyone has access to a water wagon to fill their pool. But everyone has a hydrant close to their house.
