City Hires New City Administrator

The Minonk City Council hired Douglas J. Elder as City Administrator at their normal Monday night meeting on June 15. The Council unanimously approved the appointment which is contingent on passing a physical and drug screen. The City Administrator's salary will be $70,000. He is expected to start his duties on July 6.
A search firm recruited numerous applicants for the position and presented the Council with 3 finalists for the position.
Public Safety Committee Report
Alderman Fortner reported that the new ambulance delivery has been delayed about a month. Ambulance Chief Deb West has requested some new stop signs and will be instituting a new ambulance driver program. The committee talked with Police Chief Cavera about some of the parking problems around the high school and will be addressing the parking on Maple Avenue and Fifth Street. Also the parking problems at the grade school will be addressed as well. Fortner reported the City has ordered “Dog Waste” signs for the City parks as people are not cleaning up after their pets. He said violators will face a $50 fine.
Public Comments
Dean Barth reported that there is no electricity in the gazebo at the Westside Park and requested that the City extend electrical service to the gazebo. He estimated that it would take approximately 125 feet of underground cable to reach the structure.
City Council Comments
Alderman Hill gave an update on the census awareness campaign and the meeting with a representative of the Census Bureau. He stated that the goal of the City will be to raise awareness to the census and encourage participation as an accurate head count effects our federal tax dollars that the City receives.
Mayor's Comments
• Thanked Mary Ford for her many years of volunteer service that she has given to the City at the Westside Park and wished her well in her retirement.
