News Subject: City Clean Up days announced for April 26-27 - 03/17/2008 -

Our council's lack of good judgement is going to cost our city dearly.  What happened to our city having all that extra money?  Why are we conerned about the cost of doing a regular Spring clean-up?  Is there something that we need to be informed of?  Are they only going to provide help for elderly, or will it be provided for anyone wanting to dispose of garbage that does not have the means to trasnport it to the proper location?  (Just some food for thought.)

Costs are going up everywhere!  It's a sad fact, but I am VERY, VERY glad the city has done something right by us residents.  I for one, plan year long for the curbside "junk" pick up day.  Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing the right thing!!!  It serves 2 purposes for our community: the recycle of items others can use, and the disposal of items that need to be disposed of & it gets done at one time. YEAH!!!!!

 Thank you, Free2Beme!  I was not aware, and I exceed many of the new rules quite often.  Oddly, when these notes were being distributed, I had a last minute bag to run out.  I handed it directly over to the man, and he did not bother to hand me a notice, nor did I receive one taped to either of my 80 gallon trash cans. Hmmm???

Of course we should question our elected officials!  I would recommend that everyone go back and look at the past synopses of the city council meetings that have been posted on MinonkTalk (read between the lines). Maybe I'm wrong, but I am suspicious of what awaits us in the upcoming months.  After being blindsided with this garbage fiasco, I worry greatly about the future of this town.

 Maybe I'm missing something, but why is their windfarm such a concern?  Is it just because of distance, or is there more at stake here?  I would really like for someone to explain what the problem is.  Thanks!

Your editorial brings up a very important topic, and I am so glad that you took the time to write about the lack of education going on in our district.
If permitted, I would like to submit some additional theories as to why our children are not doing well.  (Due to the length, my replies may have to be in multiple comments.)
What I can share will come from two views: me as an educator and me as a parent.  I do not teach in the Fieldcrest district, but I live in the district and have children that attend Fieldcrest schools.

 Problems stem from a curriculum that does not work, and ignorance of the obvious.Fieldcrest has an academic mold that the children must fit in or be ignored.Kids are passed on from grade to grade despite not having learned the material.Holding them back is not an answer.The administrators, teachers,and everyone working with these kids need to learn to reach out and teach EVERY child, because EVERY child can learn.

 Very well said!  As a parent, drugs are one of the most scary things I worry about for my children.  It is a difficult thing to balance freedom and independence for my children and staying involved in their lives enough to help keep them on the right track.

 I am not sure how well it will work, but I share my viewpoint on drugs with my kids often.  We tell our children the truths behind drug use.  We started talking when they were young, and we won't ever stop.  It is not the focus of all our conversations, but when the opportunity is made available we use it.

 Nicely put emo!  It's no wonder why this small town has the potential to be so much more, but yet sits stagnant festering in it's own "pool" of promises.

 I have to disagree.  I have driven by the Odell windfarm a number of times, and I like view.  They might not be my first choice for a view, but there are much worse things that we could be stuck with (i.e. a garbage dump, race track . . .)  It is a positive step that will lead us to greener energy solutions, and I am all for that.  They are a small step towards the "bigger picture."
