Bette Jochums

Softly as the tread of angels, came the summons of death to Bette Jochums on last Thursday shortly before noon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Meierhofer, just south of town, and without so much as awakening from his sleep, he passed to his future home. He had been sick for some little time.

Mr. Jochums was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, on March 17, 1842, thus his age at death being 81 years and 10 months. He came to America in 1867 and located in the vicinity of Minonk, living near Benson for a time, then near Pattonsburg and later south of this city, where he was located on the Wineteer farm for many years. About 30 years ago he moved to Sanborn, Iowa. Since his retirement some years ago, he divided his time between Sanborn and here.

He was married on March 3, 1867, to Bettje Claussen, who died in 1880. Eight children came to this home, of whom three died in infancy and George passed away on May 30, 1921.

One sister, Miss Alste Jochums. of this city, survives, and the following children: Jochum Jochums and Miss Lena Jochums, of Hartley. Iowa; John Jochums, of Sanborn, Iowa, and Mrs. Henry Meierhofer, of Minonk. There are eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mr. Jochums was the personification of an honest, hard-working man. He was a most successful farmer. As a father, he was devoted and kind, and friends treasured his friendship. During his long life he was wonderfully blessed with good health and his appearance reflected it.

Funeral services were conducted at the Meierhofer home on Saturday afternoon at 2.30, Rev. L. C. Taylor pastor of the First Baptist church, being in charge. Burial was made at the Minonk cemetery. The pallbearers were Robert Ahlers, Heddo Monk, Fred Schramm, Robert Falk, Jacob Smith and William Janssen.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Miss Lena Jochums and Joseph Jochums, of Hartley Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs John Jochums, of Sanborn, Iowa.
