Principal: James Schneider![]() The following is an excerpt from the 1939 Echo, the school equivalent of the current annual. What We Owe the Seniors: Gladys Jury and Fannie Mae Ford have set high scholastic standards for us to equal. Gladys was also chosen by the Senior girls to represent our school at the D.A.R. citizenship convention at Danville. In literary events, Fannie Mae Ford and Melvin Janssen are the shining stars; Fannie Mae having won firsts in humorous reading, essay, and extemporaneous speaking, and Melvin winning first in extemporaneous speaking and placing in a public speaking contest sponsored by the F.F.A. Irmgard Schroeder received a place in the B class in Girl's vocal. Some of the members of the Chorus belong to the class of '39 and helped in the chorus also to win a place in the B class this year even though it was the first time that we had entered the music contests in several years. This year in the shorthand contests the team, consisting of Bernice Neu, Edith Jochums, and Fannie Mae Ford won first at Chenoa District contest and fourth at Peoria Sectional contest. In the individual work, again Fannie Mae Ford came to the front with a first in the District meet and in the Invitational meet, and Edith Jochums followed closely with a second. |
Valedictorian:Gladys Jury ![]() Class President: Minard Oncken Vice-President: Samuel Wylie Treasurer: Dwight Hendricks Advisors: Miss Barth, Miss Anderson In atheletics, Harry Green, Sam Wylie, Jim Henderson and Jim Sample helped in the last two years to carry our basketball team farther in the tournaments than it had gone for quite a number of years. Minard Oncken, Jim Henderson, and Sam Wylie were three of the four members of the Freshman-Sophomore relay team who, in their sophomore year broke the county record for that event. (The record still stands). All during their high school careers the Senior boys have helped to win high ratings and honors in all the track meets in which they have participated. With the help of the high scores of Virginia Kaufman and Emma Jean Tucker and other Senior girls, the G.A.A. won a pennant in the basketball shooting tournament, the first we had ever entered. New Minonk High School - 1939![]() The Class of 1939 was the first class to graduate in the new high school building that was completed in December 1938. The old high school building burned down in 1937 and the new building was started shortly thereafter. In the meantime classes were held in the Presbyterian church and other public buildings in Minonk. The cost of the new high school was around $180,000. |
