An Army National Guard Chinook helicopter was on a routine training mission when a transmission alarm sounded for the forward rotor which forced the craft to be landed in a beanfield near Rutland.

This Chinook is able to carry two Hummvee’s at one time. It is also able to carry over 80 passengers in one lift.

The CH47D Chinook was piloted by Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4) Greenwald. The aircraft and crew are assigned to “F” Company, 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation based in Peoria, Illinois, and are veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

There were four maintenance trucks, a crane, and a transporter truck to replace the defective rotor. The ground support personnel are removing the rotors from the front transmission. Each rotor has to be removed by a crane, and placed on the ground. The maintenance crew will pull the old transmission out with the crane, and replace it with the new transmission.
